ZMF Aegis $3,499 Review
November 9, 2024 Comments Off on ZMF Aegis $3,499 Review
The Aegis price starts at $3,499.99 USD and can go up depending on the extra options you go for. It isn’t a cheap amplifier by any means, but it is a very versatile and well-built amplifier as you will see in this review. You can find the Aegis dedicated page here. You can buy the Aegis from ZMF’s shop directly here. The Aegis – according to ZMF – will be shipped within a period of 2 to 5 business days for 120V customers – while all 230/240v units will ship directly from Cayin within ten days. In Europe you can buy the 220V version of Aegis with the obligatory CE Certification for €4.099 Euro from one of ZMF’s dealers. As the Aegis originally is a DIY amplifier, it still is possible to build it yourself. That is unless you have two left hands, like me.

Matrix Audio Element M2 $3,099 Review

If you have a larger library the MA Remote app also gives you the option to jump to a specific letter of the alphabet by swiping through them on the right side of your device’s screen.
Something I found very informative is that the now playing screen of the App also shows you the kbit/second, which tells you if the played file is indeed lossless or not.
Of course, Matrix also gives you further ways to use the Element M2. The most notable being Roon. I am an avid Roon user for six years or so, and any streaming DAC that comes into my home must be Roon Ready. It is such a simple integration of products that lets me control all zones at home.
On top of Roon, you can also hit up the Element M2 via Spotify and Tidal Connect. Which is also a super easy and simple process. My fiancée also is always very happy when she can use her Spotify account in our living room HiFi setup.
Apart from smart devices, you can also use the supplied remote control or the touchscreen of the Element M2. On the screen you can swipe left to access the settings menu, by swiping right you go to the shortcut page.

Most of the session listening is carried out using a variety of headphones, but it is also tested running as a preamp into a main system. As it turns out, the Atom HE acquits itself well in both roles, though a fixed output option on the preamp sockets – enabling it to be used as a source as well as a streaming pre – would have been welcome. It’s also worth noting that Naim says all three headphone outputs can be connected simultaneously, which could be handy given that rear-pan
el XLR output, but for optimum performance it proves best to use just the one output at a time. Incidentally, the front headphone outputs will mute the preouts when ’phones are connected, while a button located above them switches the rear output on and off.

FiiO K11 R2R $159 Review
September 18, 2024 Comments Off on FiiO K11 R2R $159 Review
K11 R2R has a well-thought-out back panel for the price, housing a variety of inputs and outputs, including USB, optical, and coaxial inputs alongside 4.4mm, 6.35mm, and RCA outputs. This assortment of connections makes K11 R2R ready to pair with a broad array of sources, from consoles (thanks to UAC1) to phones and computers.
There are some practical design choices here as well; thanks to the big and wide silicone anti-slip pad, the device stays firmly in place, while the RGB logo lighting on the top lets you know the sampling rate with a quick glance. The illumination is pleasantly uniform and easy on the eyes.

Wells Audio V8 Level II Tube Headphone Amplifier Review
September 16, 2024 Comments Off on Wells Audio V8 Level II Tube Headphone Amplifier Review
Once again Jeff Wells has shown that he can make a great amplifier whether solid-state or tube, and the Wells Audio V8 Level II Tube Headphone Amplifier has proven to be one of the better OTL amplifiers I have heard, with excellent detail, solid imaging, a linear tonal balance, a large soundstage, fantastic dynamic range and above all musicality. It works well with a broad spectrum of headphones, bringing out what that headphone does best.
Like most OTL amplifiers, the V8 is not particularly forgiving of source working best with high-resolution musical DACs rather than analytical DACs. What you put in is what you will get coming out, in that sense the V8 does exactly what a reference amplifier should; alter the sound as little as possible while providing dynamic range and sufficient power and damping to drive any headphone.
