” The microZOTL 2.0’s sonics impressed me from day one. I listened to many different types of music throughout the audition period, most of it at about the same volume. Finding the volume’s sweet spot was easy using the microZOTL 2.0’s smooth running volume. It didn’t seem to matter that the volume control isn’t indented because each time I went to listen to headphones it was usually set at the correct volume. If I switched to another headphone with a different sensitivity level, re-setting the level was no big deal since the microZOTL was able to accommodate any headphone I was using at the time. ”

The tonality of the D14 is real treat for a portable amp at this price range or perhaps even higher. I would class the D14 as having actually a neutral and speedy tonality which favors clarity over any overly lush or wet signature. Detail freaks will enjoy the D14. Having said that the tuning is just on the right side of smooth with a very spacious and open sounding, much more so than the DX90. There is also bit more presence, sparkle and detail up top and a slightly more controlled and realistic bass response than the DX90. My favorite aspect of the D14 though was its clean and clear midrange with an excellent vocal presence that remained sibilant free and very natural sounding indeed.

What I can tell you, is that speaking of the DSD files, if the masters are of good quality, the listening experience is always very pleasant. They tend, if I may say, to the analogue warmth. The behavior of the DSD with this format has been good and it has maintained the tonal character said before for the DAC and for the DSD files.

” I’m hoping by now you know I’m completely smitten with the Woo Audio 234 MONOs. But the question still remains: are they the world’s best headphone amplifier? Until I hear something more amazing, they certainly are to me. $16,000 is absolutely crazy money for a headphone amplifier, but it’s all relative. If you love headphones, have multiple pairs that you cherish and a world-class source or two to provide music, there’s no other way to play the game.

My only concern was the harmony between Michal’s creations and my HD800. I would also be trying my trusty Audeze LCD-2 and compare the Sonic Pearl 2 with his first Black Pearl with PSU, Cembalolab’s Spring 1 and Burson’s HA-160DS amplifiers. I parked myself on my desk and assembled a useful playlist. My first selection was Mullova. For me, Viktoria Mullova must be one of the three finest violinists currently active with James Ehnes and Vadim Gluzman. I am a big fan and followed her since her Bach albums. Her impeccable technique and soulful tone are what I look for in a violin player. She and pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout met on this Beethoven Violin Sonatas Nos 3 & 9 album released on Onyx. Here we have period instruments with shimmering synergy. EarStream’s reproduction of the violin’s timbre was pellucid without being harsh even on Mullova’s high-pitched passages. Bezuidenhout’s forte piano was a little dark but perfect for my HD800. Too much treble energy with the Sennheiser could be problematic. Because this treble was a little rolled off compared to the Cembalolab Spring 1, there was no need to decrease the overall volume.

Off to the left, next to the now-standard XLR output, is a chunky knob that’s very helpfully marked “Power”. I like power. Moarrr powah! The knob has three positions: speaker, high and low. On the WA5LE, the ‘speaker’ option is unavailable/can’t be selected (this is reserved for the WA5, but the WA5LE and WA5 share a faceplate), but the high/low can be. Select ‘high’ and the amp gives you all she’s got — 8 watts per channel. In case you were wondering, this is a stunning amount for a headphone amplifier — but with great power comes great responsibility, so please be careful. Select ‘low’ and the secondary circuit topology is selected, yielding a total output of 1.5 watts/channel

Maestro’s masterful grip, channel balance, and blessedly low noise signature are boons to earphone users. Yes, earphone users. Despite Maestro kicking out desktop speaker-level volume levels like it was digital. Balance is perfect from the lowest volume settings, even through sensitive levels through headphones such as the 600Ω DT880, it tracks perfectly from its base volume through sensitive earphones such as the Ultrasone IQ. This is pretty-much unheard of in a desktop amp

The tonal range was very solid. The bass was tight, not woofy; the midrange was liquid and rich, while the higher frequencies felt reasonably airy, and didn’t give me the sort of headaches that substandard headphone amps can deliver. Harmonic structure seemed well balanced.

Soundstage was another area where the Bacillus Tilia could have been better when compared to others in the price range. While listening to Yosi Horikawa’s Bubbles, I found that while the amp provided a decent width, the depth and height weren’t as prominent. The same held true for Pink Floyd’s Money and Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue.
