” Having heard it stock there are 2 areas where further improvement could be made. First and most obvious one is to try out various tubes. The first tube that I tried was the Gold Lion by Genalex. This tube provided a richer bass and mids giving a richer and thicker sound making vocals slightly more pronounced. However it is kind of round off the highs. The crisp and sparkle of the highs disappeared. This caused the soundstage to collapse slightly. The next tube I got was the RCA clear top”

” This ADL pair rendered all of the subtle nuances of his vocals on this song exceptionally well. Elling’s voice floats back of forth effortlessly between high-pitched passages and deep bass tones. Not only did the H128 not add any edge to the higher octaves but they almost sounded just a bit softened compared to my highly resolved reference headphones, the similarly priced Aedle VK-1 ($480) from France. Actually, these two headphones represent the classic trade off of most audio components.

” Another nit to pick with the Taurus is that I somehow found myself preferring the sound of the single-ended outputs over the balanced with my headphones. I am not savvy enough to know the technical reasoning behind these findings. I just know that the single-ended output seemed to offer left-to-right imaging that, while a touch narrower in width, seemed a bit more relaxed and natural to my ears.
