AudioQuest DragonFly Red & DragonFly Black Review

‘Combining elements of rock and rap, Rage Against The Machine is one of the best bands of all time and features some of the best pure musicians of all time. Listening to Rage’s debut album through the Sennheisers and DragonFly Red, the Red had awesome control over the entire frequency spectrum. On “Killing In The Name” and “Take The Power Back,” the extremely powerful bass, guitar crunch, and drum kick had visceral impact and a certain clarity of which the iPhone alone could only dream. Listening through the headphone output of the iPhone 6 Plus provides a listening experience I’d rather not have again. Rage requires the Red. Period.”

PEACHTREE AUDIO SHIFT REVIEW
August 15, 2016 Comments Off on PEACHTREE AUDIO SHIFT REVIEW
” Technically the chip in the Piccolo maybe a bit limited but tonally it is a very sweet warm to neutral sound with a nice full sounding low end that stays relatively linear and avoiding any mid-bass elevation. By comparison, the Shift is little more neutral and drier sounding. You do get a decent extension on the Picollo but not as much as the Shift which has a more aggressive low-end response and a bit more slam in comparison. Neither the Shift or the Picollo have the most strident or forward trebles so both are reasonably forgiving with lossy or badly recorded material. The resolution, detail, and dynamics are firmly in the Shift’s corner even when dropping down to 16 bit sampling it just has far more to offer.”

IMS Electronics Hybrid Valve Headphone Amplifier Review

” Looking at the picture of the circuit board on the IMS website, I suspect the highlighted SMT caps couple the OPA2134 to the output jack. This implies that the opamp is not directly coupled to headphones and the opamp does not have a bipolar supply. This not necessarily a bad thing, but in my opinion direct coupling is better; the best capacitor is no capacitor.”

LEAR FSM-02 V2 REVIEW

” The situation changes somewhat when you introduce less efficient earphones or headphones. Earphones such as the 32 ohms Astrotec Lyra 6 or Noble 4C and the power hungry planar oBravo ERIB-5a via line-out. All three have double the play that the Jupiter and Se846 offered allowing up to 10-11 steps on most of the DAPs and a good bit more on the Sony ZX2. Whilst it is not a huge jump the level of control over gain and volume is significantly easier to manage.”

PHATLABS PHATASY AND SASSY – PORTABLE TRANSFORMER POWER

“Phantasy or should I say PHAntasy is the current TOTL offering from PHATlabs. Why the capital PHA, well it stands for Portable Headphone Amp of course, although we will debate that a little later on. While sassy is a hybrid and not a class A one at that, Phantasy brings together all of the PHAT principles that we started off this review with. For a start it is well and truly a tube amp, not an ounce of a transistor to be seen. Considering portable amps that feature tubes in some way or another aren’t the newest thing around, being a solely battery powered pure tube amp is something else. In fact the only other one I know of in existence is Woo Audio’s just released WA8! This really is a crazy design”

Astell&Kern AK70 Player

” Unlike the AK Jr., the AK70 puts a 2.5mm balanced socket next to its standard 3.5mm socket. This brings output power up to 2.3Vrms – the same as the top of the line AK380. The internal DAC chip is a Cirrus Logic CS4398. That’s the same silicon as seen in the AK100 II but not in the AK300. However, you might not be using it”

FIIO A1 AMP REVIEW

” You immediately hear the elevated bass kick in on the first bass boost setting (+2.7dB). Besides changing the bass level, it doesn’t really impact the sound apart from the slightly more forward vocals. Bass body now is bigger and it still isn’t the tightest. It doesn’t really run over in to the mids yet but it’s close. If you need more bass than on the normal setting, the EQ1 setting most likely is the one you’re looking for as is most dynamic and “correct”. With bass heavy head/earphones such as the Urban Vinyl Classic, bass even on Bass 1 setting is too much already, but that’s personal preference.”

” I also listened to the ‘Black and ‘Red plugged into my iPhone 6S. Again the sound impressed with some of the same headphones mentioned above. Then I tried a few in-ear headphones, starting with the Klipsch Reference X6i and Cardas A8, comparing the iPhone 6S’ headphone jack with the sound of the Red. The difference in sound quality wasn’t nearly as significant as it was with full-size headphones.”

Audioquest DragonFly Black review

” Though clearly cut from the same cloth – the v1.2’s strict balance, rhythmic intelligence and joie de vivre reveals itself in its successor – the Black makes ground on the legacy sound with more insight and dynamic impetus.”
