CYPHERLABS TRIO THE TUBE PORTABLE REVIEW
August 17, 2015 Comments Off on CYPHERLABS TRIO THE TUBE PORTABLE REVIEW
“The HE-560 with its even larger and deeper sound stage did even better on the Trio than its little brother and it performs at its best: huge sound stage, lots of room between instruments, very high detail level and great extension. All that combined with the tube touch of the Trio makes the sound not only very detailed but very musical as well. I immensely enjoyed this pairing with a lot of different musical styles and I’m convinced you’ll love it too. In fact, I liked the Hifiman pairing so much I dug out the good old discontinued HE-500. Again, Trio performed with excellence and the HE-500 at high gain sounded sublime”
CALYX M DAP – REVIEW

” As mentioned, this is quite a natural sounding player with no real bloom anywhere that I can spot. I do find things lacking on the low end in terms of quantity on a subjective level though, again due to that lack of an EQ, but the Calyx M also offers a bit of an interesting texture to the bass as well. ”
ALO Audio Continental Dual Mono DAC / Amp $1,495 – Review

” At $1,495 the Continental Dual Mono is the most expensive portable amp/dac combo I have ever reviewed. But with portable players beginning to hit the $3.5 mark the move seemed almost inevitable. It adds just the right amount of fun to the mix without ever being overbearing or colored. It is feature rich in all the right places and leaves very little else on the table. The included stock tubes feel right on the money but allow for tube rollers to fine tune the device to their heart’s content. If the CDM falls in your price range suit up, grab yourself a pair of respectable headphones and lose yourself in the music. The best is only going to continue to get better. “

AUDIOTRAK DR. DAC3 Review

” The big take from the DR DAC3 is its huge sound stage: open, wide, tall, smoothly textured, and absolutely unaffected by load. Plug in your DT880/600, your IQ, your SM2, your PM2: each is going to sound its best. It is absolutely load agnostic. So, if you’re really into wide, detailed, and sweeping sound stages, it won’t matter what headphone you have. Each will check all of the above boxes. DR. DAC3’s sound stage and stereo detail are among the best that exists.”

“I found no issues without having a gain switch on the ONE. The range of the volume control was very wide, so the ONE worked fine with both my Shure SE-425 IEMs and my Sennheiser HD-600s (I didn’t listen much with the 600s, but I wanted to be sure the ONE would drive them successfully). Battery life was very good. I did all my testing on a single set of batteries. While a rechargeable battery like all the other amps in this roundup is nice, good old-fashioned AAs have their advantages. If they’re flat, all you need to do is put in a new set. If one of the other amps is flat, you have no choice but to recharge, which isn’t much of an option if the plane is boarding right now”

” The essence of the Liquid Carbon was derived from design concepts originally implemented in Cavalli Audio’s larger Liquid Gold and Liquid Glass amps. In many ways, it is very much a true Cavalli amp. It’s just smaller, with lower power output, lower noise, and very reasonably priced. ”

” If we’re talking generalizations, which is exactly what a conclusion generally is, my feeling are a preference towards the Astell&Kern $499 AK Jr over the original $1299 AK120 reviewed in August 2013 and that, in itself, says quite a bit about how good this little Jr reproduces music! The compromises made are right in line with exactly what I’d prefer. Keep the musical harmonics to the slightly nice versus sterile side of life,

“Conversely, if you’ve got a high-impedance headphone, employing CDM’s DAC will net you more volume. CDM won’t bleed your DT880/600 anything like TELOS. At its highest volume setting, and when fed a USB signal, it spits about 20dB more volume than I can comfortably take. And CDM performs near flawlessly right up until a full twist of the volume pot, in either gain mode”
