” First of all the X3 Second Generation is a DAP for on the go, and a good one for that. I’ll go in to a detailed comparison with the first X3 in the next topic but I never was a big fan of the original X3. This new one is better in every way”

“The Flow also has plenty of treble extension, and an initially-perceived stridency turned to realisation that it just sounded ultra-clean. Vocals and instrumentation in the mid-band similarly sounded as honest as I’d heard in some time, without the slight emphasis some tend to favour. ”

“Yes, there is a hint of brightness to the upper midrange for sure, but it does not take away from the experience at all and I would also assume that most midrange-aphiles would gladly sacrifice neutrality for a nice, aired out and breathable experience.”

“The HA-2 is a portable headphone amp about the size of an iPhone 6, and includes a USB DAC that supports 384 kHz PCM and DSD256. The two DAC input ports support USB for iPhone/iPad as well as mini USB for Android and laptops”

” On low gain my Inearz IE-P350 sounded excellent and there is only a tiny bit of channel imbalance at the lowest volume which is too quiet to listen to even with sensitive headphones. Very good.”

” While initially the dSP’s mid section felt quite tidy and immediate, sometimes that same immediacy felt a little to forward around the human voice. If vocals are your thing, than this subtly may not even peak your radar, but in my never-ending quest for balance, I found myself reverting back to pink noise tests to confirm that things weren’t being overcooked. The results were actually very reassuring”

” The pentameter knobs twist smoothly, and are balanced well enough. They neither grind the wells in which they sit, nor the wall behind them. They are pressure-fitted and grippy. They feel great, and aren’t easy to accidentally turn”:
Sony MDR-Z7 Headphone & PHA-3 Headphone Amp

” Nitpicks: The PHA-3 leaves you clueless about the resolution of program material—there’s absolutely no precise indication of sample or bit rate in play aside from the Hi-Fs indicator telling you you’re over 48kHz. And it’s the same story with the battery—there’s no way to know how much juice is left in the lithium-ion rechargeable battery, other than a blinking LED when it’s almost empty. I averaged 10 hours of play time per charge, and charging from empty to full takes a lengthy 15 hours! The unit will not charge while it’s playing, even if it’s plugged in.”

“There is no perceptible difference in quality of signal between low and hi gain when driving voltage hungry headphones. When driving earphones, hi gain doubles the amount of background noise, which, by the way, is considerable”
Does a high-res music player make sense for you?

“Just because a file is high res doesn’t automatically mean it sounds different or better than standard resolution files. The quality of the original recording comes first, if it’s great, it can sound spectacular even as a 320 MP3 with high-res players, with a set of killer headphones.
