ACS Encore IEM Review

” My first impressions of these and one that has continued through this day is that these are a bassy earphone. Initially this was fairly surprising as I had heard the Evoke and Evolve at ACS’s labs and both had great balance but this has a clear focus on mid bass but continues with some solid extension down low”

” The presentations are quite different even though both are supposed to be references as the midrange is much more in-your-face from the LR, and the upper midrange even more so. The more laid-back presentation of the NT-6 doesn’t give the focus on note articulation of the LR, but it does give a more spacious and larger overall sound. From a frequency response perspective, the treble of the NT-6 is much more prominent in comparison to the upper midrange while the LR is the opposite, with a relaxed treble region; treble quality of the NT-6 is a bit higher. Bass is more prominent with the LR and rumble and reverb are more pronounced, although the NT-6 is as capable”

” The mids sit just behind the lows in terms of presence, but they do not sound recessed. Vocals shine through with good detail and no sibilance, both male and female vocals sound even in their presentation. Electric guitars have power, and the mids are always present and engaging, acoustic guitars have body and decay.”

“Lower midrange is perhaps more akin to the bass response being full but polite and staying slightly muted however detail and zip picks up with a more forward vocal range. There is a slight bit of sibilance now and then on some vocal tracks with the stock cable but nothing distracting. ”

” While there are basic differences in note presentation, as the Legend-R articulates details more, bringing them to the forefront, both have a natural tonality. Spatially the SE5U is larger and more open, which is in part due to the presentation perspective, but the SE5U is superior in focus within the soundstage for a cleaner overall render. Detail levels are similar, but the SE5U recreates more of the spatial queues with a higher overall resolution.”

” I am not saying that the sound quality is all inferior, it is not, really. First of all, the bass is more apparent than treble and mid. But in my opinion it is not that recessed that will make vocal music sounded bad, in fact I think that treble and mid are not recessed it is just the bass is emphasized so you get that feeling. Mid and treble are still clear, overall sound quality is good with pop and R&B, music that I listen usually when I am jogging. Reception is reasonable good, at least I have no problem putting it in my pocket while jogging. Sound quality is reasonable good, if you ask me, it is actually better than the wired Apple Earpod, so it isn’t bad at all.”

“All of this is also wrapped up in a very impressive spacious soundstage with above average width, depth, separation and imaging. Considering this is a 4 driver setup the soundstage is far superior to other equivalents such as the Westone 4R, tonally more engaging than the 3-way Minerva Mi-Pro and less shelved down than the W330AR from AAW using their stock cables.”
