“We’ve had an amazing run over here at Part-Time Audiophile and quite frankly, I’m continuously baffled by that. Clearly, you, our readership, have some serious issues with maturity, taste, and time-management. God bless you.”

Final Sonorous Review
January 2, 2016 Comments Off on Final Sonorous Review
” Final of course make up for it with their richly gilded heavy-metal connectors. They supply a shorter 3.5mm terminated leash and longer version. On surface treatments, anything this mirror polished is greedily prone to skin oils, dust and sundry usage marks. To maintain such immaculate gleam requires a micro-fibre polishing cloth and fussy applications thereof. No cloth was included but should be. On fit & finish in the flesh rather than as photoshopped perfect hero shots, the Sonorous X lived up to their glossy promise. They looked every bit as posh as they did in the adverts. Living up to published 105dB screamer promise was full lift-off at 60% on the dial of even a now ancient 160GB iPod Classic. My RWA-modified ‘zero output impedance’ Astell&Kern AK100 showed 35 on its needle. Questyle’s QP1R sat at 15 in hi-gain mode.”

Best Open-Back Headphones under $500
December 31, 2015 Comments Off on Best Open-Back Headphones under $500
” Most serious listeners plug headphones like this into the headphone jack of a stereo receiver, or into a special amp designed just for headphones. The HE400S will likely sound better when used this way, but this model can deliver great sound even when plugged straight into a smartphone—a big plus. Most open-back headphones aren’t practical for portable use—they have low sensitivity, which means a smartphone or tablet may not be able to deliver adequate volume through the headphones even when cranked all the way up, and they let in too much sound from the world around you, but when you want to sit down at home for some focused music listening, they’re the best thing going.”

Sonus Faber Pryma Review
December 28, 2015 Comments Off on Sonus Faber Pryma Review
“Anyone who is familiar with the sound of Sonus Faber’s speakers will immediately notice that the engineers successfully transferred the philosophy of imaging the sound to the first headphones in the company’s history. It can be instantly heard that Pryma was created by the same people who designed the last Sonus Faber’s speakers. At first, their sound seems slightly tinted, but the adaptation does not take more than five minutes. We discover that there is enough treble here – certainly less than in an ideal situation, but really nothing important is missing. ”

HIFIMAN HE-1000 $3000 REVIEW
December 27, 2015 Comments Off on HIFIMAN HE-1000 $3000 REVIEW
“Treble is incredibly detailed, layered and extended. Bad recordings in combination with a silver cable sometimes result in a bit of sibilance but in general the HE-1000’s treble perfectly complements the bass and mids. Treble flows fluently from the mids with great clarity and precision. Treble is airy but precise and very dynamic. I do have to say I preferred the HE-1000’s treble with warmer sounding solid state amplifiers and on tubes.”

December 23, 2015 Comments Off on Sennheiser HD 800 S headphones NEW
” The new £1,200 HD 800 S is precision-built in Germany and features a striking industrial design. Its transducer is encased by stainless steel, while the headband and headphone mounting utilises advanced materials developed for the aerospace industry, giving high strength with minimal weight. Its layered-metal headband construction attenuates vibrations to the ear-cups, while the hand-made Microfiber ear-pads offer exceptional comfort, even over extended listening periods.

Mrspeakers ether REVIEW
December 22, 2015 Comments Off on Mrspeakers ether REVIEW
” The project was code-named Dreadnought after the Theta Dreadnought 5-channel home theatre amp I use to this day. It made for a nifty code name. Along the way we were doing research on driver behaviour in closed cups and I came across a knurled planar-driver patent by Bruce Thigpen. I called him to ask if he thought it’d apply for our use. He thought it might and suggested we try It helped but not enough to solve the problem we had. Bruce’s knurling technology basically creased the driver panel to reduce surface oscillations which can cause nonlinear response and distortions. We discovered that if we took the process a lot further by using a deeper form of knurling that permanently deforms and textures the driver surface, we reduced distortion, improved dynamics and extended response at both ends of the spectrum. ”

Audeze unveils EL-8 Titanium headphones
December 21, 2015 Comments Off on Audeze unveils EL-8 Titanium headphones
” Audeze has used an exclusive ‘cypher cable’ with an integrated amp, DSP and DAC, which supports 24-bit hi-res audio. The unit on the cable doubles up as a microphone and is Siri compatible, and a 3.5mm cable is available for use with non-Apple devices. Audeze also has balanced cables for Astell & Kern, Pono and Sony PHA-3 players.”
