The open-backed planar magnetic headphones also use the company’s Fazor elements tech; “special acoustic elements” placed either side of the magnets to improve transparency and overall sound quality.

Directly comparing the sound of the HE1000 with an Audeze LCD-X open-back planar magnetic headphone was a fascinating exercise. The LCD-X is an awfully good headphone, but it sounded smaller, dimensionally flatter, and more opaque with a 192-kHz/24 bit hi-res FLAC file of David Chesky’s new orchestral work, Joy and Sorrow. The HE1000 presents a clearer window to the sound. Bass slam, dynamics, definition, and texture are stunning; you hear deep into the bottom end of your recordings with rare precision. The HE1000’s highs are supremely sweet, airy, and hyperextended, which seems to play a role in liberating the soundstage from the ear cups.

Second, the HE1000 offers a smooth, even, and neutrally balanced frequency response curve—one that places it on a par with such acknowledged masters of accuracy as the critically acclaimed Sennheiser HD800 (but without the German headphone’s tendency to sound stiff and analytical at times). In practice, this means the HE1000 treats music in an honest, even-handed, and accurate way, but without sounding clinical or austere in the process. As a result, this headphone draws out the naturally rich and vibrant tonal colours of fine recordings, while refraining from adding its own embellishments or euphonic colourations.

Compared to the bass and midrange, treble performance is not as great as it could be. I would have much liked there to have been more extension and sparkle to uplift treble-tilted tracks. While by no means treble-anaemic, there is an apparent roll-off where the very high frequencies are concerned. Both the Sennheiser HD598 and HE-400S therefore eclipse the TH500RP in treble performance offering more height and air in this part of the frequency range. The only benefit of this type of tuning is the obvious reduced levels of fatigue that can normally be experienced from a brighter headphone model.

But can the HE1000 also compete with the mighty Stax SR‑009 electrostatic headphones? In a word, yes. My sense is that the HE1000 is on a par with the Stax in terms of speed, detailing, and transparency, but without—and this is important—the Stax’s occasional tendency to overlay the music with a subtle touch of treble ‘sheen’ that makes small details stand out in almost exaggeratedly sharp relief. Add to this the fact that the HE1000 offers arguably superior dynamics, better and more incisive bass, and can be driven by conventional (rather than purpose-built electrostatic) headphone amplifiers, and I think we have a winner.

” The Sennheiser HD700 deserve there place in the audiophile headphone world. Incredibly balanced and transparent whilst managing to deliver the sound in such a way that it will do justice to well mastered and recorded tracks. Soundstage and presentation are both impressively large most likely attributed to the fact that the headphones are open backed. ”
