ZMF Bokeh Openr $1,119 Review

‘While good, both combos aren’t the very best when it comes to layering and sound stage, but when you plug in the Bokeh Open to a high-end amplifier such as the Auris Audio Headonia, all that changes.

I am using the Luxsin as DAC with the Headonia and in this combo the Bokeh Open really shines. You get an open, spacious and airy sounding headphone with excellent dynamics.

The cleanness, clarity and precision are really good and something you usually only get with more expensive, even higher end headphones. The presentation here is musically neutral with tube smoothness and there is just enough weight and body present.

MOONDROP Horizon $199 Review

August 25, 2025 Comments Off on MOONDROP Horizon $199 Review

The Horizon has a nice mix of warm and slightly U-shaped sound signatures, with a laid-back sound, yet it presents details with many nuances in the vocals and instruments.

There is a perceived reduction in response in the lowest part of the bass, known as the sub-bass, which is prevalent in open-back headphone designs.

However, there is a slight boost in the mid-bass, making the roll-off in the sub-bass sound less noticeable. The Horizon has the most sub-bass among the headphones in this review.

A slightly rounded, soft-textured yet articulate characterizes its bass sound, which adds to its overall warm, relaxed, and pleasing tonality.

Midrange is lush, warm, and slightly thick, combined with a somewhat relaxed perceived upper midrange response, which gives instruments and vocals proper note weight and body, preventing them from sounding thin.

Treble is slightly relaxed, smooth, and dark, but not too dark; it conveys a lot of information and detail, rendered in a somewhat laid-back manner and never aggressively. Suffice it to say, the upper midrange and treble never become shouty, piercing, or fatiguing.

HIFIMAN ISVARNA Hybrid Headphone $2,899 Review

August 23, 2025 Comments Off on HIFIMAN ISVARNA Hybrid Headphone $2,899 Review

I’ll admit that when I first listened to the HIFIMAN ISVARNA Hybrid Headphone at CanJam, I was intrigued but did not love them, feeling they were a bit Rock&Roll for my tastes, but after having had them in hand and really spent some time with them, I have completely turned around. As I mentioned above, they are not particularly forgiving headphones, so I think electronics choice is going to make a huge impact on how much you like them. I think bass heads are going to be blown away with their ability to cover the full spectrum and really thump. The HIFIMAN GOLDENWAVE SERENADE R2R DAC/Headphone Amplifier proved to be an excellent match for the ISVARNA, but hardcore audiophiles are going to want to pair them with a good tube amp and a top-notch DAC.

Most surprising was the fact that they are pretty much genre agnostic, I really expected them to muddy up classical and complex musical pieces and nothing could be farther from the truth, on the other hand given the right source material they can give you that real club feel, and live but musical appears to be the name of the game.

Kiwi Ears Septet $269 Review

July 31, 2025 Comments Off on Kiwi Ears Septet $269 Review

The bass on the Kiwi Ears Septet is excellent, with a clear focus on clarity and definition rather than weight or boom. Each note is precise, letting the character of bass guitar strings come through with ease.

Sub-bass rumble is present and felt, adding depth and body to the overall sound and preventing any sense of dryness. Mid-bass is controlled with a quick decay, making sure it never muddies the rest of the mix.

There’s a refined quality to the tuning, with the low-end never sounding forced or exaggerated. Subtle details from drum hits are easy to pick out, and each low-frequency sound lands with its distinct shape.

The bass here is not energetic or overwhelming, instead leaning into a more balanced and natural presentation. The emphasis is on texture and subtle impact, letting each part of the bass register be heard clearly.

Focal Hadenys Review

July 23, 2025 Comments Off on Focal Hadenys Review

https://www.hifichoice.com/content/focal-hadenys

The Focal populates this space with tonality and realism that isn’t unsettled at any point. The sparse opening to Jim James’ State Of The Art is delivered with his distinctive vocals beautifully defined against the no less tonally appealing piano. As the track builds towards its crescendo, the Focal adds each layer without sounding strained or congested. There is an effortlessness to what it does that can make rivals sound flawed by comparison.

The joyously ballistic Girl With No Face by Allie X is a head-nodding surge of electronic power in the hands of the Hadenys. It is fair to argue that it doesn’t have quite the same out-and-out bass extension as some rivals, but it would be a stretch to call it bass light. It’s also usefully forgiving of poor recordings.

The Audeze CRBN2 – according to Audeze – requires an amplifier with an electrostatic output using 580VDC bias, also known as “Stax Pro Bias.” There are a large number of suitable amplifiers on the market from a variety of brands will drive the CRBN2 well.

Audeze has a list of examples here, but of course a lot of other amps are suited to drive the CRBN2 as well.

You can find out all you need to know about the Audeze CRBN2 on its dedicated web page here. If you want to dig in and learn more about Audeze’s EST tech, you can do so here.

Dan Clark Audio NOIRE XO Open Back Planar Magnetic Headphone $1,299 Review

June 19, 2025 Comments Off on Dan Clark Audio NOIRE XO Open Back Planar Magnetic Headphone $1,299 Review

For openers, the Dan Clark Audio NOIRE XO Open Back Planar Magnetic Headphone is an apt and epic replacement for the ETHER2. It provides that same fun, popish warm sound, while adding a whole layer of detail and clarity, and reaching down into sub-bass territory usually allocated to closed-back headphones. Dan Clark Audio has done it again, the NOIRE XO definitely qualifies as a must-hear mid-priced reference headphone. It always astonishes me that every time they set a new bar in headphone performance, they are later able to shatter that bar with something new that makes you wonder how you were satisfied with the old sound for so long, though admittedly, for Dan Clark Audio, it’s not all that long between revelations.

Back when I first reviewed the original AEON Open, when the ETHER C Flow and ETHER Flow were the pinnacle of headphone performance, I said that if I was just entering the market and didn’t already have the ETHER C Flow, I would buy the AEON Open and AEON Closed rather than the ETHER C Flow, because they gave 90% of the performance and offered both sonic profiles. And today I am happy to say that the same applies to the NOIRE XO and NOIRE X, if you only have a budget for one $4,000 headphone, you would be better served to buy the pair of Dan Clark Audio headphones. Of course, if you have the $8,000 budget, go for the EXPANSE and the STEALTH, they remain my top reference headphones, though I only own the EXPANSE.
