KLIPSCH HERITAGE HP-3 HEADPHONES $1200 REVIEW
July 23, 2018 § 1 Comment
“The Klipsch Heritage HP-3 Headphones are everything you would expect from a reference headphone produced by a company with Klipsch’s pedigree. They are definitely a look into the limits of dynamic driver headphones, producing extreme dynamic range with epic concert levels of bass, without compromising the tonal balance of the low mids, mids and highs. If you are familiar with Klipsch’s Legacy speakers, you will know what to expect from the HP-3s as they have truly captured that big horn sound. While not forgiving of certain recordings, they appear to work well with any source and are efficient enough to run off a phone or one of those tweaky “high end” DAPs that usually require an external amplifier.”

Grado Labs PS2000e Headphone $2695 Review

“The soundstage was cleanly defined from edge to edge or, uh, ear to ear. A good example was Dean Martin’s “I’m Confessin’ (That I Love You)” from Dream with Dean, where the spread of the soundstage places the bass and lightly brushed drumkit at opposite sides of the stage but acoustically linked together in purpose by the wealth of ambient cues. Generally speaking, the Grado soundstage wasn’t the narrower, more vertically oriented representation of my resident HiFiMan Edition X ’phones, but rather a truer horizontal, reasonably dimensional stage that supplies relevant cues to the acoustic weight and breadth of an orchestra in full song. There’s a whole-cloth continuousness about the soundstage with the Grado.”

Audeze LCD2 closed-back $899 version

“You’re still getting the same planar magnetic drivers. Unlike normal headphones, they use a thin, vibrating diagram that’s driven by magnetic fields to produce sound, instead of a traditional coil system. This has come to be expected from Audeze, which created the same warm sound that made the LCD-2 so popular in the first place. Now, you can enjoy it with better sound isolation, and perhaps more importantly, you won’t irritate all your co-workers or fellow commuters with your personal jams.”

SENNHEISER HD 660S REVIEW

“Overall, the Sennheiser HD 660S represents a stronger, and arguably better version of its predecessor, the HD 650. It retains the smooth signature but imparts more spirit into it this time around. This change isn’t for everyone, but I found it for the better as it gave songs and genres that previously needed that oomph the ability to shine; it was that little bit that was missing that the 660S brings to the table.”

FINAL D8000 PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONE
July 11, 2018 Comments Off on FINAL D8000 PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONE
“Straight out of the box, the D8000 offered astonishingly fine bass and midrange performance, but with upper mids and highs that, though very clear, also seemed a bit reticent or subdued. However, after several hours of run-in time using a ‘Cascade Noise Burn-In Sounds’ track from Tara Labs, the D8000’s mids, upper-mids, and highs opened up in a magnificent way, so that the headphone’s tonal balance became pleasingly neutral while its overall resolution, transient speed, and focus took quite dramatic steps forward. The resulting sound was, I must say, simply breathtakingly good, though in an effortless and almost self-effacing way (the D8000 offers listener’s huge helpings of sonic excellence, but never sounds as if it is working hard to do so).”

STAX SR-L700 LAMBDA EARSPEAKERS/SRM-006TS REVIEW
July 10, 2018 § 1 Comment
“Eventually, when you get past being enthralled by the sound of the system, you can begin to point to its strengths. The most obvious is the speed of delivery, and it’s that speed that makes you so enthralled with music. Listening to Richard Thompson’s guitar playing requires a system that can translate his dexterity, or potentially ruin the performance. Here, the Stax pair shine, and it’s like the man is playing live in your listening room. That speed doesn’t just apply to fast folk guitarists, it is needed universally; when you experience it, it’s hard to break away from its thrall. Other systems – even supposedly fast ones – sound sluggish by comparison.”

Sony WH-1000XM2 Wireless Noise-Cancelling Headphones Review
July 5, 2018 Comments Off on Sony WH-1000XM2 Wireless Noise-Cancelling Headphones Review
“I conducted several lengthy listening sessions with the Sony WH-1000XM2, with various musical genres, and watched a variety of video content, from energetic action movies to quiet dramas, wired and wireless, with and without noise cancelation, and there is no doubt these headphones sound wonderful. I would easily rate them near-audiophile quality. No smiley face EQ curve here, unless that’s what you want, as you can easily dial-up whatever EQ settings you like. Sony even added LDAC, which enables hi-res audio, and when your source is not hi-res, DSEE HX is a digital sound enhancement engine, sort of like the audio equivalent of video up-converting.”
