“I switched from vintage CSN to new hi-res files released by one of my favorite audiophile labels, MA Recordings, and the MDR-Z1R seemed to melt away and transport me directly to the sessions. The rarefied sounds of the La Segunda and Será Una Noche albums were exquisite, with finely focused and precise stereo imaging. I hope more mainstream recordings sound like this someday. ” Oh, come on! This is a brand new HD650 for only $199. It probably has a better paint job as well that won’t decay in a few years time, as all HD650’s of old tend to. This is quite literally the best open back headphone deal that exists and I hope it forces Sennheiser to wake up and go back to their roots. I’ve cried for years and felt supremely lonely in the fact that I am a musicality buff and personally prefer fun over accuracy in my headphones. It seems like the HiFi market shifted to mostly natural/neutral sound signatures and forgot about the classic, musical sounding headphones from yesteryear, the HD650 being the poster boy of that class of listeners.”

“Vocals, whilst neutral and not that far forward have superb control for both male and female vocals with decent space to breathe. They do not have the thickest sound but they come across as accurate and most importantly not a sibilant tone to be seen anywhere between 1 – 4k.”

“While I hesitate to call any component “the best,” the Focal Utopia certainly ranks overall as the finest dynamic headphone I’ve experienced to date. It is among the most comfortable, sonically neutral, and well-built headphones I’ve ever reviewed. Its faults are minor (the cable), and easily remedied. Yes, it is not inexpensive. However, I heard from a reliable source that initially they were going to be priced much higher, but Focal demurred, judging that market acceptance would be much better at $3999 than $6999.
