Noah Wall’s Down Home Blues (192-kHz/ 24-bit) brought out the best in the RS1e: That spacious soundstage, freewheeling dynamics, and vivid clarity down to the quietest details of the recording were all more effortlessly revealed than what I heard from my 10-year-old original Grado RS1. The family resemblance was obvious, but the RS1 had a fuller, fleshier tonal balance, while the RS1e’s clarity outpaced the elder model.”

” Performance-wise, the BT2200 serves up a generally well-balanced sound that doesn’t over-emphasize the highs or the lows. I would classify the high end as being a little laidback: I didn’t hear harshness or brightness in the highs of Chris Cornell’s “Seasons,” Junior Kimbrough’s “Junior’s Place,” or Peter Gabriel’s “Sky Blue,” but the high frequencies also fell back a bit in the mix, lacking the clarity, crispness, and openness that I get from my much more expensive reference”

“If you require a full-sized headphone that delivers a high degree of isolation, none of the Stax open-enclosure designs are going to work for you. But currently none of the other models I’ve mentioned that are in contention for “best” headphone are closed-enclosure designs. As of right now, if isolation is your top priority, you may either have to opt for a custom in-ear monitor or compromise with a headphone that’s not quite as spatially open, harmonically uncolored, or detailed as the Stax SR-L700.

“I don’t own an original HD 800, so I visited my friend Michael Toto at Stereo Exchange in NYC to compare the store’s HD 800 with the HD 800 S. Plugged into a Chord Hugo headphone amp/DAC, the HD 800 S is sweeter on top and fuller on the bottom, but both headphones share a big-as-outdoors soundstage. The HD 800 S takes a bit of the edge off overcompressed recordings, while the HD 800 lets you hear every last bit of the harshness. With pristine audiophile recordings, I preferred the HD 800.”
