PSB Alpha P5 Loudspeaker $399 Review

“As with virtually every small monitor—that is, every two-way restricted to a single four- or five-inch woofer—spatiality and orchestral soundstaging were strictly small-scale affairs. The ability to define the full contours of an auditorium or to reach upstage to the furthest corner of an acoustic venue are beyond this segment’s purview. Nonetheless, within its limitations, P5 conveyed string section layering, orchestral depth cues, and image focus that outclassed much of the competition.”

Scansonic MB5 B Loudspeaker Review
July 31, 2020 Comments Off on Scansonic MB5 B Loudspeaker Review
“If the original MB 5 would sound effortless, calm and perhaps a little creamy then the MB5 B stands ready to bring more energy, vigour and chest-pounding vitality to the music at hand. Perhaps the ‘B’ should be retitled ‘D’ because while this reworked version looks identical, when played hard it reveals itself to be a sonic dopplegänger. OK, so the MB5 B is no evil twin, but it does play Mars to the MB5’s Venus…
The ribbon-esque treble unit, unchanged here, sounds deliciously open and extended without a hint of brightness. There is still plenty of ‘air’ but absolutely no coarseness or brittleness, qualities that feed all the way down through mid and bass to ensure the MB5 B creates large and unforced soundscapes.”

DALI MENUET SE SPEAKER $1799 REVIEW
July 30, 2020 Comments Off on DALI MENUET SE SPEAKER $1799 REVIEW
“And so, my reviews of European speaker companies continue. As much as I like the DALI Oberons, I was really impressed with the performance of the diminutive Menuet SEs. The quality of the gorgeous walnut finish was amazing and the sound from these little speakers was much bigger than anything I thought you could get from a speaker so small. When paired with a sub, you could easily have a 2.1 system that would make many people envious. DALI has proven that size is in the eye of the beholder and if saving space is as important to you as having excellent sound, the Menuets may be exactly what you are looking for.”

“It also reckons it’s the first system ever to employ a 28mm beryllium-diamond dome tweeter. This is combined with a 152mm midrange, two 280mm mid/bass and a pair of 380mm bass drivers utilising Magico’s Analog Crossover (MXO), which features Linkwitz-Riley filters to deliver 24dB per octave slopes at the crossover frequency of 120Hz.

KEF R5 LOUDSPEAKER AND KF92 SUBWOOFER $5,000 REVIEW
July 22, 2020 Comments Off on KEF R5 LOUDSPEAKER AND KF92 SUBWOOFER $5,000 REVIEW
“Every single note projected from this system had a seamless and uninterrupted path from the formation of the note, to the sustain of the note and to the decay of the note. The low end of the R5’s without the KF92 is clean with the port plugs installed, without, the bass deepens and becomes more open and dynamic. Midrange and upper frequencies were absolutely full of detail and articulate but not bright or overbearing. Personally find myself able to listen for hours without any fatigue. The R5 does a good at being resolving, bringing you all the detail within a recording, all while being forgiving to recordings that are not of the greatest quality.”

Rockport Technologies Avior II Loudspeakers Review

“Listening to Sara Watkins’s Sun Midnight Sun (16/44.1 FLAC, Nonesuch/Qobuz), he noted that “her fiddle sounded rosiny, and her voice in ‘When It Pleases You’ was clear and tinged with emotion.” Jeff could also clearly hear that the recording “lacks wide dynamic range,” and pointed out that it “can sound too processed through some speakers because of their inability to reveal microdetail — sounds that should be distinguished from each other are instead mushed together. But I found that if a recording contains a detail, I heard it through the Avior IIs.”

ELAC NAVIS ARB-51 ACTIVE BOOKSHELF SPEAKER $2,299 REVIEW
July 20, 2020 Comments Off on ELAC NAVIS ARB-51 ACTIVE BOOKSHELF SPEAKER $2,299 REVIEW
“The Uni-Fi is still a great little speaker for the money. Hook them up to some good electronics and a healthy dose of amplification and they will just boogie all day long and you won’t get tired listening to them. The Navis is like the Uni-Fi but turned up to 11! Everything that I was hearing on the Uni-Fi was played back with more clarity and specificity on the Navis. Where I thought I knew where instruments and details were when listening on the Uni-Fi, I knew exactly where they were when listening through the Navis. The bass on the Navis also felt like it had a little bit more wallop than from the Uni-Fi but I don’t think it actually reached any lower in range.”

Magnepan unveils Little Ribbon System
July 13, 2020 Comments Off on Magnepan unveils Little Ribbon System
“Manufactured in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, the LRS (Little Ribbon System) is cloth covered with a 32mm-thick flat panel standing 1,220mm high and 370mm wide. Unlike conventional box speakers, which radiate sound forward, the LRS emits audio from both the front and rear, and where most speakers use dome tweeters and midrange or low-frequency drivers, it instead adopts a thin film aluminium ribbon. In simplest terms, air is shifted and sound waves are created by the ribbon, while its ultra-low mass enables it to respond quickly to the electrical signal that comes from the amplifier to produce bass, midrange and treble frequencies claimed to be more detailed”
