“The DAC uses 24-bit upsampling for internal processing at both the USB and Bluetooth inputs for improved signal-to-noise ratio and a lower noise floor. Hi-res audio purists should note that the DAC operates at 44.1 kilohertz (CD quality) or 48 kHz (slightly better), so the system isn’t necessarily hi-res throughout the signal chain. However, it had no trouble accepting files stored at up to 192 kHz and 24 bits and via my PC running foobar2000 music software, seamlessly converting these in the process.

“The kick drum and bass guitar in the Real Estate track had more presence through the GoldenEars, due to that speaker’s more authoritative bass. But treble smoothness and “sparkle” were about the same through both models, and the Viotti Ones easily rivaled the Triton Fives in imaging and detail. Heron Oblivion’s psychedelic guitar jam held together better and sounded more balanced through the GoldenEars when I pushed the volume to near-uncomfortable levels — something I anticipated, given my previous experience of using those speakers to play punishingly loud music.”

” The Motion 40 cabinet comes with adjustable spikes to help decouple the cabinet from the floor. I recommend the spikes for absolute best sound, but the speaker also comes with soft dome feet for those homes where the floor is not carpeted. The Motion 40 has terminals for single or bi-wiring. Although the speaker will work fine with single wire, there are advantages sonically to bi-wiring and or bi-amping. Eliminating the common ground from the mid-range/tweeter driver and the bass drivers will deliver better sound by improving the amp to speaker electrical relationship, and avoiding any detrimental interface between the crossovers. Bi-amping will allow the listener to add an additional stereo amp or pair of mono block amps for better power reserve and improved dynamics.”

“Alongside its new turntable, Burmester showed its upcoming BC350, a somewhat less extreme version of the winged behemoth shown last year. Price is still to be determined (but it will be six figures) and will likely be launched in 2018. ELAC also showed a late prototype of the Concenrto M, a €30,000 slimmed down version of its flagship. Others worthy of note include the TIDAL La Assoluta, Raidho’s D-5.1 tower, and the Wilson Benesch Resolution played through Ypsilon electronics. I’m sure there were others, but I have to say I didn’t hear much that got past ‘mediocre’ and one or two that could strip paint at 100 paces’
