MartinLogan Expression ESL 13A hybrid electrostatic speaker Review
January 5, 2017 Comments Off on MartinLogan Expression ESL 13A hybrid electrostatic speaker Review
“The MartinLogan Expression is able to generate high sound levels compared to other electrostatic speakers as the stators are closer to the charged Mylar like material than other brands of electrostatic speakers. The panels were also designed to have twice the radiating area of a traditional electrostatic panel of the same size. From my experience, very loud sound levels were obtained with 6 to 60 watts as measured by my amps wattmeter. The Expression is rated at 91 dB sensitivity and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. However at 20,000 Hz the impedance drops to .5 ohms. Thus, the speakers may not sound crisp with some tube amplifiers in the higher frequencies”

Martin Logan Ethos Review

” For some tastes however, this excitement may be too much of a good thing. This forwardness can probably also translate into a glassy or harsh sound, if the matching components are inclined that way. In my setup however, with either the Devialet or the Rowlands, at times they can sound very lively and forward indeed, but unless played very loudly with very brightly recorded material they do not normally step outside of my comfort zone.”

Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 90 loudspeaker $84,990 Review
December 29, 2016 Comments Off on Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 90 loudspeaker $84,990 Review
“I have a quibble. While it’s impossible to discern at which frequencies the BeoLab 90’s various drivers hand off to each other, and the speaker’s harmonic integrity was continuous from lowest lows to highest highs, its sound was slightly warm, with rich but tight bass, a smooth midrange, and a mere suggestion of brightness in the very high treble. The BeoLab system is designed to permit the buyer or dealer to tune it to the buyer’s room and taste, but at the time of this auditioning, the comprehensive control app was not yet available. As a result, that kind of tweaking was not possible. What I heard was the original factory tuning, and an undefined target curve for the EQ.”

Tannoy Mercury 7.2 Review

” There isn’t oceans of space, though that’s neither a surprise nor a major criticism given the Mercury 7.2s’ stature, but the detail is enough that we can pick out the instruments as textures build and don’t feel we’re lacking any parts.”

German Physiks Unlimited MK II Loudspeaker Review
December 27, 2016 Comments Off on German Physiks Unlimited MK II Loudspeaker Review
“The strong points of the German Physiks Unlimited MK II are many, one of which is its huge soundstage. But it also has the uncanny ability to elicit an emotional response when it reproduces the sound of an orchestra. The omni-directional sound places each instrument and group of instruments within this huge soundstage, and this soundstage is occupied by extremely realistic sounding instruments to create the illusion that one is hearing a facsimile of an orchestra in miniature. It does this by creating a three-dimensional sound of the instruments and groups of instruments that occupy this soundstage”

FOCAL SOPRA NO.3 LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW
December 24, 2016 Comments Off on FOCAL SOPRA NO.3 LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW
“The biggest Sopra might not represent the same astonishing balance of virtues as the No.2 – or be quite the bargain that the No.2 most definitely is – but its ability to dig deeper into the recording, to get closer to the original event and bring that performance to life makes it significantly more impressive and engaging than its smaller brother, once you hang it on the end of a high-end system. I used it with both ARC and Berning amplifiers and never managed to outrun its capabilities. While the traditional, performance related numbers on the spec sheet might not explain this, perhaps the less obvious ones do

” Sonically, the Gold 300 tends towards a relatively “bottom-up” sound that is consistently balanced, rich, and full—and always musical. And its C-CAM ribbon tweeter boasts remarkable range. In addition to its stellar sonic capabilities, particularly throughout the midrange where its realism proved most striking, the Gold 300 is also quite a sexy-looking beast—even one that might meet with spousal/partner approval”

ELAC’s Debut B5 Loudspeaker $229 Review
December 21, 2016 Comments Off on ELAC’s Debut B5 Loudspeaker $229 Review
” I set up a pair on stands in my living room, driving them with a moderately powered high quality Class “A” solid state amp and then with my reference Music Reference RM-200 tube amp and used a modestly priced CD player. Yes, the amps are far more costly than the electronics that most likely would get used with these speakers, but they are more likely to show the speakers’ flaws and the sound produced was surprisingly satisfying, “musical” and convincing. So that’s why I say the ELAC B5 is not good “for the money”. They are just good”
