Lorenzo Audio Labs LM1 Loudspeakers $200,000 Review

Cut to the chase. First impressions were highly favorable. The LM1s sounded musical from the very first note. Presumably because of the rigid, lightweight, high-efficiency drivers, the LM1s sounded super dynamic! It was astounding. The horn loaded tweeter and super tweeter were indeed very special. They sounded open, open, open. The sound was fast, transparent and extended, totally musical, sweet, and engaging. As good as my reference Vimberg Tonda D was, it was no match for the LM1s. They’re a game changer. I said to myself they better be superior as they cost about three times as much as the Tonda Ds. Tondo D is an exceptional loudspeaker regardless of the cost, and it competes with loudspeakers that are much higher in price. Of course, the higher we go up the ladder, at some point there’s a diminishing of return. But listening to the LM1s was a revelation. They were involving and rewarding with all types of music. You don’t need to go back and forth to compare the two. What can I say? The LM1s are in a class of their own. The LM1s rendered music brilliantly and effortlessly with solidity and proper weight delivering a transparent and resolved midrange, and a treble presentation that was impeccable with an exceptional richness of overtone and proper timbre. When done correctly, there’s a magic in speakers that use a large high sensitivity single driver. I think it is superior to using multiple smaller drivers. A large driver moves air differently, effortlessly, and produces more realism and ease with weight and solidity.

No matter what I threw at it, recordings or ancillary gear, the Revela 1s made me forget my cares and get happy. Sparkling, pure highs meet rich, warm bass for a very satisfying sound. Forget harsh treble; the Revela 1’s treble is smooth, see-through, and revealing, and allied to rich, flowing, surprisingly impactful bass.

Serious fun and a solid value, this speaker comes with stands and, though modern in appearance and features, boasts the vintage pedigree of one of audio’s most respected brands. Recommended without reservation.

Buchardt S400II Loudspeaker Review

December 18, 2024 Comments Off on Buchardt S400II Loudspeaker Review

Musically, the Buchardt S400II stand-mount loudspeakers have neutral yet natural tonality, refined and accurate reproduction of vocal and instrumental timbre, a controlled and defined bottom-end, natural yet but exceedingly engaging musical presentation that conveys a lifelike and very engaging presentation. I’ve enjoyed the experience of listening to these wonderful recordings on the S400II speakers. Some of their most notable attributes are their tonal accuracy and timbral sophistication, presenting the music with sophistication, nuance, and finesse. In addition to delivering excellent detail, the S400II speakers refrain from overemphasizing this to the detriment of the overall musical presentation. Instead, they seamlessly integrate all these musical attributes into a greater whole, creating a listening experience that is dynamic and lively, lifelike and natural-sounding, and most importantly, musically engaging. These musical attributes are capabilities that are not showcased simply as standalone virtues but are seamlessly integrated into “a whole” that is greater than the sum of the parts in their reproduction of the overall musical experience.

Sonus faber Sonetto V G2 loudspeaker $6499 Review

I had these speakers in my living room system for nearly two months and thoroughly enjoyed them with a wide variety of music. I drove them with two high-quality rigs: my reference system and the T+A R 2500 R streaming receiver I reviewed in the August issue. The Sonetto V G2’s were at home in both setups, presenting full-range music at room-filling volume. Given their relatively modest list price of $6499 for the pair, that’s impressive.

To my ears, the Sonus faber Sonetto V G2 is an enjoyable, well-sorted speaker capable of producing full-range room-filling sound and bringing forward subtle details, with all the types of music I sent them. Given their price, this may be extraordinary. They don’t sound bright or glaring. Their low end is ample and satisfying. They rock, swing, and can reproduce a full orchestra.

Magnepan 2.7X. World’s FIRST Review

December 16, 2024 Comments Off on Magnepan 2.7X. World’s FIRST Review

Keep the Magnepan 2.7x speakers operating in their optimum zone with music that plays to their strengths delivers an experience few speakers can match. There’s a truth in the mid 85% of the musical spectrum that is hard to ignore. Where similarly priced MartinLogans will play louder and go deeper (because they are a hybrid design with a DSP crossover and two active woofers) but that’s not really an apples to apples comparison, just as comparing an older Porsche Boxster with a six-cylinder normally aspirated engine to the current model with a higher-torque, four cylinder turbo model. They are still the same car from the same company, but the way they deliver the experience is very different – though each will be highly satisfying to a certain customer.

Alta Audio Aphrodite Speakers Review

Creative, highly improvisational, exploratory, and mystical sounding with masterful musicianship, Aphrodite’s spatial cues made me feel like I was inside the church with its high ceilings and reverberations. Track 11, “Este a Székelyeknél” (In the evening at the Székelys), is based on a Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tune composed for piano by Béla Bartók in 1908 (from Ten Easy Piano Pieces);  Bartók then orchestrated it in 1931 with woodwinds and strings (No. 1 from Hungarian Sketches). At times, both Frisell’s guitar work and Downes’ organ imitated the high-pitched wood instruments of the Bartók orchestral version, while Cyrille tastefully chimed in with the resonating bells on his cymbals. It gave the piece a pleasant, oriental-like sound that Aphrodite displayed with impressive finesse and delicacy

Launched alongside the N801 was the actual range-topper, the Nautilus 800, the single 380mm bass replaced by a pair of 250mm units. It cost more, at well over £10,000 per pair, but was slimmer, easier for amplifiers to drive and didn’t need a huge room to work well.

Bowers & Wilkins (as the company is now) went on to introduce diamond tweeters with the 800D range, now in its D4 iteration. The Nautilus itself is still listed, with a 30th anniversary edition launched last year at a mere £100,000 per pair. But there is a waiting list.

Silent Pound Challenger II Speakers €27,999 Review

December 10, 2024 Comments Off on Silent Pound Challenger II Speakers €27,999 Review

They have a high engagement factor, drawing one into the music and allowing to fully enjoy and comprehend what is being conveyed. Their clever design makes them easy to place and position, and their patented midrange driver enables sound to expand far beyond the speakers, creating a remarkable horizontal and vertical soundstage.

The same goes for the depth of the sonic sphere, where the Challenger II allows music to emerge from a deep, black background, cutting through with refreshing airiness while staying true to the realistic portrayal of musicians and instruments.

Voices and instruments are presented with lifelike size, drum attacks are sharp and fast, and the leading edges of notes retain their crispness. This enables the Challenger II to instantly lock into the beat, reproducing music with stand-out clarity, transparency, and vividness.
