Perhaps counter-intuitively, one should not just up and clean a really dirty disc. Any loose debris should be brushed off (HumminGuru makes a nice one), wiped up with a microfiber cloth, or snagged with a sticky lint roller. There is a filter (actually a screen) at the bottom of the trough designed to trap pet hair, dead insects, or whatever weird stuff detaches from the vinyl. This filter can be removed for cleaning with the multi-purpose tool. The air intake filter is under the power button end, and can be changed without a tool.

OK, we are now ready to insert the LP into the machine, making sure it is seated in the slots at both ends of the trough and the central support above the bottom filter. Select a Clean mode, press the start/pause central button, and the disc will slowly rotate counter-clockwise, in and out of the fluid. The HumminGurus are much quieter than vacuum-style cleaners, but they are not silent and sound slightly different, but our microwave seems louder. The LEDs on the Nova light up sequentially to monitor progress, but neither unit provides an audible signal upon completion. I just use a cheap kitchen timer.

The Telos Audio QRC and GNR, however, seem to have a more comprehensive approach to noise suppression and power management. Put these two devices into your system and boom! Noise floor eliminated. There was such a thorough feeling of quiet in my system that I started hearing more of what was happening outside–those friggin’ noisy hummingbirds and Stellar’s Jays and ospreys, the occasional lapping of water on the shore from a boat wake, Colleen in the middle of a Zoom call on the other end of the house. Is that a bad thing? Of course not! But it demonstrates the effects of the Telos Audio gear on my reference system in a fairly obvious way.

Do you need both the QRC and the GNR to achieve this level of quiet in your hi-fi? That’s an interesting question, because I did spend considerable time in determining which product contributed the most to the overall improvement–power conditioning and grounding may have a common goal, but they’re traveling from different directions to get to the crossroads. The Telos Audio QRC added consistency to the signal, a feeling that there was always a steady flow of juice coursing through the system to deliver the same results every time. The GNR, however, supplied the silence. That black and velvety silence, that space between the notes that’s just as important as the notes.

My listening was focused on two particular aspects of performance. First, I approached the PowerQuest 303 as a potential solution to an audible problem with my system. Second I listened for any possible effect the unit had on the overall character of the system’s sound.

As a possible first for me, I must report on listening to my system without music playing. The baseline noise from my speakers was dramatically reduced once I introduced the PowerQuest 303 into the system. It’s a head-scratcher that an aging switch mode power supply with transformer issues would perform differently with a change in AC power. Even more, so that the hum from the ERCO DAC itself was slightly reduced. What is the root cause of this improvement? I do not know. But it was blatantly easy to compare without music playing. Just noise then less noise. This is a singular situation to be sure, but it illustrated to me that the PowerQuest 303 was doing something and that in my case that something was an improvement
