“What better way to introduce this new long term project than to quote Geoffrey Sumner’s spoken words at the beginning of the classic 1958 Decca compilation A Journey Into Stereo Sound [SKL 4001]. Nearly six decades since the introduction of stereo sound onto vinyl, and seven since Columbia cut the first 33 1/3 rpm microgroove LP for commercial release”

Do Lossless DTS-HD MA Soundtracks Stay Lossless?
January 20, 2017 Comments Off on Do Lossless DTS-HD MA Soundtracks Stay Lossless?
” When a disc with a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is played back, depending on the capabilities of your hardware the DTS decoder will either process the core 5.1 version (downmixing to 2-channel PCM if necessary), or process both the core version plus the extension data to effectively reconstruct the full lossless 5.1- or 7.1-channel soundtrack. In cases where a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is played on a 5.1 system, the back rear and side channel information is folded to a single set of stereo surround channels, but the resulting audio is still output in lossless, high-resolution format.”

Shunyata Research • Denali 6000/S, 6000/T and 2000/T Power Conditioners Review
January 1, 2017 Comments Off on Shunyata Research • Denali 6000/S, 6000/T and 2000/T Power Conditioners Review
“Remember that the 6000/S also contains the same technology physicians are using in Shuyata’s medical conditioners to improve diagnostic imaging. While I’m not even a doctor on TV, I am qualified to describe what happened when I used the 6000/S conditioner in my modest home-theater system, which includes a six-year-old Sony Bravia HDTV. I’d been considering an upgrade to Sony’s 4K UHD set, but the saturated colors, vivid detail and crisp definition that appeared on the Bravia’s screen when I hooked up to the Denali made me think twice. It’s an old audiophile cliche to drag one’s family into these sorts of stories, but the God’s honest truth is that my wife asked, “What did you do?!” when she saw this year’s Olympics on the Sony after the Denali was added. She marveled at being able to read distant writing on athletes’ jerseys as well as being able to identify facial features of audience members. Everything appeared more three-dimensional, making it easy for us to imagine what such a device would do for diagnostic imaging in hospitals.”

Audiodesk PRO Ultrasonic Vinyl Cleaner Review

“” Fast forward several more weeks during which I cleaned more records on the Audiodesk but this time I used the longest cleaning cycle followed by a “pure” water rinse. At this point, a record which has gone through an extended cleaning on the Audiodesk is close to if not indistinguishable from one cleaned on the KL. Regardless of which machine is used, a “pure” water rinse results in an improvement in sound. Keep in mind that with either machine you are continuing to use the fluid over a large number of records plus in the case of the Audiodesk, you have the addition of the detergent/surfactant. ”

Naim Mu-So Qb Review

“When was the last time you had a major experience just turning a component on? You might think I’m crazy, but I highly suggest turning on your Qb in the dark the first time you power it up. Naim’s app makes it easy to control from your smart phone, but you’ll want to give that big, weighted volume control a spin. You’ll want to get up, walk across the room and interact with the Qb, it’s that cool.

Analog vs. analog
December 25, 2016 Comments Off on Analog vs. analog
” Word of mouth – fortunately – works quite well and gossip and so-so practices of (ugly) people not saying the source and dubbing/mastering methods (even, in worst cases, declaring as 100% analog tapes their FLAC-sourced music onto reel to reel tape) widely circulates among the die-hard music and audio lovers.”

Okki Nokki Record Cleaner Review
December 25, 2016 Comments Off on Okki Nokki Record Cleaner Review
” For those vinyl fans who enjoy buying pre-owned records, or who have a lot of old records in their collection, it’s a good idea to purchase a second Okki Nokki vacuum arm. The wands are easy to swap, plus there’s no sense in rubbing old dirt into new vinyl. Save the “clean” arm for your new records, and keep the “dirtier” arm handy for the big jobs.”
