” These same files through the original non-MQA Explorer sounded very similar to each other: The MQA version playing back as a 24/48 file and the 24/96 version playing back in its native resolution. I believe the MQA version still had that softer, rounder quality, and a generally less digital sound, but the differences were subtle. I could be happy with either in this hardware and song scenario.

” True, listeners who rely exclusively on AirPlay for music may find an Apple AirPort Express -Parasound Zamp v.3 Revision 2 combination to offer equivalent functionality, a similar footprint, and largely equivalent sonics at a slightly lower cost. But that’s two boxes with a discordant appearance compared to a single nicely-styled component with slightly stronger AirPlay reception. Also, the Monitor Audio Airstream A100’s preamplifier section allows use of multiple sources, not just AirPlay. My main criticism of the A100 in-use reflects my own laziness as much as anything else: it does not automatically enter or wake from standby. You have to actually press a button, either on the remote or on the unit itself, to put the A100 in standby or wake it up.”

Then there’s this whole audiophile culture phenomenon of reviews. Reading/writing reviews and discussing all facets of high-end audio is how we bond with each other, other than listening to music, of course. I personally have a sick addiction to reading reviews. (Art Dudley and John Darkø, I’m talking about you.) If I couldn’t justify it by working at Stereophile, it would be depressingly unhealthy. But non-audiophile: even if you come across the occasional dry review, the amusingly childish forum post, or the unfavorable naysaying comment, do not let it dissuade you. We are fiercely passionate music lovers at heart, who are all fighting for the same thing.”
