XACT S1 Music Server Review

JPLAY also incorporates several features that were thus far only available in Roon. For instance, the app has full streaming service integration and automatically shows other versions of the same album, such as the Qobuz version of a local album, as well as suggestions for other artists I might like. Another rare feature is the possibility to add tracks to playlists no matter where you access them, be it on the associated album, in the Queue, or another playlist. A Radio function is also included. Initially introduced by Roon, this is another feature that you will not find in other UPnP apps. This super-handy function auto-selects and plays music at the end of the now-playing queue based on music played earlier, as well as direct user feedback. You can teach the algorithm by thumbing it up or down. And, to top it off, the app offers a Focus function, which lets you quickly and easily narrow down the search results.

PS Audio AirLens Music Streamer Review

In my experience with PS Audio components, what sets them apart is the care, quality, and superb sound performance, so I wasn’t surprised that this small but beautiful design was their newest creation. I can almost hear the response to this review: It doesn’t have a DAC, and what do you mean it has no screen? Are you saying it doesn’t have Bluetooth? Yes. It is USD 1999 for a DAC-less, Bluetooth-less, Screen-less streamer, but I tell you this, the clean and immersive sound you’ll get, the way you’ll experience streaming with this great audio component is well worth it.

PS Audio AirLens Music Streamer 1999 Review

And how did the AirLens do with different DACs? When I compared them, I could hear a thin sound but clear sound with the Cambridge Audio DAC-Magic200—the streamer handles itself but is “too clean and bashful”. When I connected the Wiim Pro Plus it was a “crisp-shouting” sound. I used the DAC from the Wiim Pro Plus, but I also compared it as a streamer (to the Stellar Strata) and here it lacked substance—the non-naturalness, and digital quality were there. But when I connected the AirLens to the Stellar Strata the sound was alive, full, and pleasant to the ear, separation yes, but more so a laid-back sound, clean as well. It’s difficult to describe a specific characteristic of the AirLens, but it is warmer than I expected. I thought it would be more on the neutral side, but no, and I’m not complaining.

HiFi Rose RS150 Review

Turning the wick up a touch, the thrill of the orchestra at full speed in the Scherzo of the Fourth Symphony sees the RS150 start to let its hair down and party. Similarly, switching to something a little different in the shape of Tame Impala’s Lonerism album sees the hard-driving pop shown in the best possible light. From the thumping percussion of the intro to Be Above It, the music surges out with supreme thump and punch, carving persuasive instrumental textures without overly deconstructing the wash of sound. Pleasingly, the results appear to remain broadly the same regardless of whether music is streamed via the network, the internal drive, the digital inputs or as a Roon endpoint. The performance remains consistently rich, dynamic and rewarding with only that slightly soft soundstage focus holding it back in any way – and this only seems to be in evidence on particularly atmospheric recordings such as church-recorded choral (which can sound a tad dry) and simply miked jazz in reverberant studio acoustics.

Recognizing the diverse needs of headphone users, Motivo features a no-compromise headphone section. It includes the flagship Class-AB TPA6120A2 amplifier from Texas Instruments. The headphone amplifier is connected differentially to the Sabre DAC ES9038, to minimize the common-mode noise.

The output stage of the headphone amplifier has been fine-tuned for both high and low-impedance headphones, with two dedicated outputs.

XACT S1 Music Server $13,900 Review

May 6, 2024 Comments Off on XACT S1 Music Server $13,900 Review

He succeeds more than you’d expect. This solid-state digital music server inspired thoughts of the Golden Age of Stereo, that high-water period in tube analog recordings dating from sixty years ago. It has the kind of frequency response and comfortable ear-feel that tends to make people smile. There’s even a bit of the golden glow.

The way the S1 reproduces space will make you do a double take. Digital has well-known issues regarding image depth, in particular roundness in space. The S1 overcomes that by fleshing out the missing dimension. Then it goes a step beyond and projects the images into the room, creating the kind of spatial holography we associate with tubes. To say the S1 is unlike other digital components is an understatement.
