Tapping anywhere on the album art pauses the player. When the DP-S1 is locked, inadvertent changes in attenuator position can be muted. Better yet, the attenuator doesn’t commandeer the touch screen, possibly forcing jumps up or down when all you wanted to do was change tracks or browse music. The only DSP available when playing DSD files is the low-pass filter. The Onkyo DP-S1 doesn’t properly do gapless, but gaps are small, pop-less, and even between DSD files, not terribly long.”

“The argument for using a smartphone with the Mojo as opposed to the dedicated XDP-300R might also be made depending on your use. Many smartphones don’t have a Micro SD slot, let alone two! Not to mention that using a dedicated DAP is also a little more relaxing with no need to worry about incoming calls or notifications popping up.”

“Navigating the UI is done by a mixture of capacitive touch activated and physical buttons. Down the left side of the unit, we have the power switch and volume rocker while on the right we have three evenly proportioned ovals that act as forward, back and play/pause. My biggest gripe with these is the lack of an identifier for in your pocket fumbling. On the front we have a tactile circle that is your select key surrounded by 4 touch sensitive icons that give off a right buzz when you select them. I like something confirming my action but after a while I did opt to turn the vibration off”

” Fiio’s TOTL DAP, the X7 (with my favorite AM2 card loaded), costs around $479 for the moment on Amazon.com. It is faster in general usage and it updates the library faster as well. With both players you get more or less the same functionalities but the X5iii is the easiest to use because of its design/layout. The X7 is faster and more reactive. The X7 has less noise than the X5iii when using sensitive monitors. Compared to the X7/AM2 combo, the X5iii sounds a little sharper where the X7 is cleaner and more precise. The X5iii is close to the X7 and the X7 is closer to the i5. Compared to the X5iii, the X7 still wins on technicalities and I don’t see any reason why you should turn in your X7 for an X5iii. They’re both great players, I prefer the sound and usability of the X7 but the design and lay-out of the X5iii.”
