“THe M5 outperforms the M3’s treble presentation in so many ways. Whilst not being the last word in natural decay, the M5 lower treble is far less sibilant and peaky with a much smoother and less uneven treble presentation. I always though the M3 could get a touch too peaky, but the M5 seems to have a more refined approach with excellent detail and articulation. It is not as smooth sounding or warm as the Alien, it does have a sharper edge to its attack but it easily outperforms the even sharper sounding Cayin N5 and the flatter sounding Opus#1 and definitely more spacious sounding than the old M3.”

” Overall, the Questyle QP1RDAP is an excellent companion which offers outstanding sonics in a durable and yet stylish design. Having said that, the user interface is not the best and would have benefited from a more modern approach akin to today’s smartphones. Questyle have chosen to go down a retro-style approach, however, which rests more in line with the design language of this DAP. What impresses me most is that the QP1R continues to sound great through all of its gain settings giving it the much-needed versatility to stand out as an all-in-one solution. At $899 (£745), it is not the cheapest player around but should be a serious consideration for anyone wishing for a great build and an excellent audiophilic sound.”

” The Treble is the best quality of the entire experience, by far. You can get a nice and sweet sound up top, but not so much in the bass or midrange bands. I don’t know why. Most EQ presets are painful and severely thin out of the entire experience, like Classical for example, an unlistenable monstrosity of an EQ that I’d not force upon my worst enemy. Do know that you can achieve very good treble response with some toggles here and there, but nowhere else.”

” The L5PRO has full bodied bass and mids and the overall sound quality of the L5PRO is incredibly good so we all expected a lot from the “little” L3. I’m very happy to report that the sound quality is no different with the L3. It simply sounds superb with the right mix of body, detail and musicality. The L3 is clean and clear and has a good resolution overall. The treble section might be a little less bodied than the bass and mid-section are. From bass to highs I’d call this a pretty linear sounding DAP though. The L3 doesn’t emphasize bass, mids or treble but it displays it smooth and effortlessly with a hint to the lusher and warmer side without losing any of the detail and without going too far away from a neutral delivery. Compared to higher end players like the AK380, the L3 misses out on depth, width and layering but there’s no shame or surprise in that. More comparisons later on”

” So now we have three modules for the X7 all priced at $99 and all offering something different, be it efficiency or power, be it neutrality or musicality. I did say in the AM2 review that I wished you did not have to buy the AM1 with the X7 just to lower the overall cost of ownership of this developing ecosystem for the X7. Thankfully, FiiO has responded to this by releasing the X7 without any amp modules for a lower price. If you want an AM2 or an AM5 now you can have it without having to buy the AM1. Good news for those with a particular usage needs or those simply on a tighter budge”
