A Pioneer spokesperson described the new music player as “for those who feel smartphones aren’t offering satisfying sound quality”. And the XDP does seem likely to surpass the average top-of-the-range smartphone in this regard, thanks to support for numerous audio formats including lossless FLAC, MQA, ALAC and DSD audio up to 11.2MHz. The metal body also houses two circuit boards, which the company says will help “eliminate the effects of digital noise” by keeping the audio components on one and the regular processor on the other.
ASTELL & KERN AK380 HIGH-RES DIGITAL AUDIO PLAYER

First and foremost, the AK380 consistently serves up a precise and firmly controlled sound characterised by transparency, openness, nuance, and an overarching sense of almost boundless attention to detail. Stated another way, the AK380 serves up clarity with a capital ‘C’ and an enchanting quality of musical lucidity that just won’t quit. In my experience, these qualities often caused even casual, first-time guest listeners to stop in their tracks and take notice of the pocket-sized player. I suspect this is because the AK380 tends to shatter preconceived notions of how a portable product will sound, instead delivering the sort of self-confident and self-assured sound that many would associate with premium-priced full-size components.

Looking at the side profile, the ZX100HN also appears slimmer and neater than the ZX2 – the mound which protrudes out of the back of the flagship model hasn’t transferred further down the food chain. Instead, the ZX100HN favours a more streamlined look with a subtle bump. The back panel, meanwhile, now seems to be covered in textured rubber instead of leather.

With that slight harshness done away with as well as the metallic edge to the attack, the X5 Gen 2 top end sounds far more engaging. It also sounds more detailed and articulate though not quite on the same level and extension as say the Cayin N6 or even the DX90 but it’s a lot closer than the older X5 Gen 1

Astell & Kern AK Jr review

There’s plenty of breathing space for each element of the tune, even as the Jr confidently knits them all together. It’s a brisk, forceful and poised sound, and it makes the case for high-res audio in unequivocal style.
ASTELL & KERN AK380

Which is to say: the AK380 has the ability to perform, but you have to really coax it. It is held back by a poor balanced output the use of which I cannot with good conscience endorse outside of passing signal to outboard amps

The good news is that the Jr supports multiple formats including the important high resolution audio ones like FLAC, WAV and AAC. It also supports the DSD audio format created by Philips and Sony that ramps up sampling rates above CD quality music but does invariably mean bigger files sizes.
