” Every review should include at least one recording of a woman’s voice. I picked another fave, Shelby Lynne’s Just a Little Lovin’ (DSD64/DSF, Lost Highway/Analogue Productions). In the title track, the opening bass note literally shook the room and sounded like a believable part of the performance. The growling bass guitar provides a strong underpinning for this song, as it does for the entire album. Instrumental parts were reproduced with such delicate, detailed precision that they sounded quite real, and the textures of Lynne’s voice were reproduced with plenty of expression and feeling”

“The Merrill and the Lamm were similar in other ways as well, the biggest being their effect on listeners. When the Christine Preamp was in line, after no more than a minute a contented expression would appear on their faces, and they visibly relaxed. They ceased talking or whatever they were involved in to give full attention to the playback. These reactions to the Christine Preamp were immediate, repeatable, and always salubrious. More often than not that happened with the L2.1.”

” I could only imagine the performance of McIntosh’s MP1100 phono preamplifier! The internal phono stage of the C2600 matches its linestage perfectly – it has a beautiful sounding midrange that brings out the best in vocals and string sounds, and although the very lowest bass and highest treble frequencies seemed a bit attenuated, with good system matching this might not come into play that much. The internal DAC of the C2600 is that it is as transparent as one could ask for.”

Everything I hear may not depict the razors edge of speed and fine details. But where these qualities are lacking something that is consonant and very musical replaces it. Words like polite and or warm may seem repetitive but it denotes a consistent quality that follows the sound from every source.”

“Often when I’m writing a review I try to think about the person who might audition and then buy the product at hand. How would his or her wants and needs inform the buying decision? For much of my time with the Vivaldi 2.0, I was too preoccupied with my own wants and needs, greedily shuffling through my CDs and SACDs and raiding John Quick’s USB and NAS drives, to consider anything beyond the simple pleasure of listening to music. While it’s staggering how many ways you can integrate a Vivaldi 2.0 system into your audio system and home network, I personally would keep it simple (so to speak) and use it primarily for playing discs, relegating file replay to what could be copied to thumb drives”
