“This combination of transparency and resolution without etch that defines the brand was readily apparent in all three Inspiration products. I have so much experience with Constellation that there was no mistaking the Inspiration’s crystalline transparency and openness for anything else. This see-through quality didn’t just allow me to hear instruments in the back of the hall or deep into a multitrack mix; it also conveyed an impression of immediacy, of the air in which the instruments exist being “charged” with the life and vitality of the hall or studio.

” Audiophiles can be horridly anal about things like meters, and I’m sure the discovery of the needle on the amp hovering to the side of dead center would be a cause for alarm to some. All it takes to quell fears that the Pass Labs X600.5 is not in operational disease is to scan the images on the Internet, where the needle of the functioning amp is seen most often not centered. So, go ahead and lay that irrational demand for a perfectly vertical needle on the Pass Labs meter to rest.”

“he other part of the Parasound’s purchasing proposition is its phono stage, and again this is good, holding its own against the sort of thing you can buy separately for £200 or so. It sounds much as the line inputs do, being clean and detailed with an enjoyable and expressive nature. Freeez’s Southern Freeez is great fun, the P5 really carries the track’s relaxed, warm and carefree sound, reminding me of the brilliance of this tune. Ultimately it lacks detail and finesse, but there’s absolutely no sense of it being a cheap, last minute addition. It brings useful extra functionality, and will happily work with a turntable of the calibre of a Michell GyroDec, for example.”

” The Reference 10 didn’t sound even a bit soft or cloying, as even some modern-day tubed preamps can. Its sound was about truth, though not a severe form of it that’s more an ideal than a welcome quality. Dynamics were impressive on both the micro and macro scales, the Reference 10 revealing the tiniest of shifts in inflection from a stringed instrument, then roaring like a jet when the brass let loose. ”

” On a Tony Faulkner orchestral recording, Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances, we were impressed by the Burmester’s ability to provide flawless deep bass, conjuring up almost subterranean sounds from a truly black and hash-free background. And we found that the 102/101 combination could really give convincing weight and scale to a concert grand piano – we really enjoyed Patrick O’Byrne playing Ravel on Stockfisch Records

” On both digital and vinyl I was impressed by the preamp and amp’s silky midrange and the wealth of detail they produced. Mated together, they definitely supply a sound that lands firmly on the tube side of the sonic spectrum. The preamp is a balanced hybrid design that takes several minutes to warm up?

“The P5 is basically a nicely balanced device, offering a detailed, precise sound that is well extended at both frequency extremes. It takes a neutral – and in absolute terms slightly dispassionate – look at the music, and lets it play with minimal interference. This is, of course, exactly what a good preamplifier should do”

“Prospective buyers will then want to know that the Mani is not a piece of s(c)h(i)it. Far from it, it’s terrific. Do you honestly think Mike Moffat and Jason Stoddard would risk throwing away years of hard won respect on an entry-level phono stage? The Mani doesn’t disappoint one bit, charming with a sense of transparency and easeful-but-clean treble articulation.”

” The Boulder 2110 also has all the features an audiophile is likely to need in a linestage preamp. It is fully balanced and uses all-XLR connections. (Any device using RCA connections will need an adapter.) The 2110 has six pairs of inputs that can be labeled by name, three sets of main outputs, and programmable recording-output features. ”
