Simaudio’s Moon 791 has received much attention and much praise on SoundStage! Network sites during 2023, as did the Moon 740P ten years earlier. In the December 1 review, the 791 earned a Reviewers’ Choice award, as the 740P did in 2013. The next accolade came on December 15, when the 791 was recognized as one of the Products of the Year for 2023, as was the 740P before it. Now, the Recommended Reference Component award is yet another formal recognition the 791 shares with its predecessor. And while garnering the same accolades, the 791 far surpasses its predecessor with its DAC, streaming module, phono stage, and broad connectivity. That it does so without compromising performance is a stunning achievement fully deserving of every honor that the SoundStage! Network can bestow

Marchand Electronics LN112 MC Phono Preamp Review

Overall, I had a great time listening to those five RVG Blue Note LPs with the Marchand Electronics LN112 phono preamp. As I mentioned back in the Setup section, the LN112’s lack of a power button was a bit of a nuisance — but, as Dr. Marchand noted in his earlier direct response, he will (hopefully) correct that soon enough. Other than that pesky nit, I can confirm the Marchand Electronics LN112 is a musical-sounding — and quite satisfying — MC tube phono preamp that, without question, deserves an audition, so I say go ahead and give it a shot.

Simaudio Moon 791 Streaming Preamplifier $9500 REVIEW

That the MiND Controller app showed the DSD resolution is one indication of the tight integration of Roon, MiND 2, and the 791. Another is that Roon also transfers each album’s graphic to both the MiND Controller app and the 791’s front-panel display. This integration goes beyond the sharing of playback information: a volume-level change in Roon is synced with the app and the 791 with minimal lag. I also noticed that the track-skip function on both the BRM-1 remote control and within the MiND Controller app was synced to the one in Roon. Finally, I discovered that when the 791 is on standby, an audio signal from Roon will kick it back to life and automatically select the MiND input if another is selected, which is all very convenient.

Krell Illusion II/KSA-i400 Pre/Power Amplifiers Review

An Ethernet port is provided on the power amp for software updates, but the only means of control from the preamp is via 12V triggers for on/standby. The Illusion II itself has two sets of balanced analogue inputs and three on RCAs, plus two coaxial, optical and one AES/EBU digital input. Outputs are also on XLRs and RCAs, alongside 12V trigger in/outs, and a socket for an external IR receiver should you want to hide the preamp away.

Front panel controls are via traditional ‘pin-head’ pushbuttons, duplicated on the chunky metal remote handset. There’s no volume knob, but the balanced resistor-ladder adjustment has a rather a large number of very fine steps controlled by up/down buttons. This makes for precise if rather slow adjustment, but at least the blue light-bar on the preamp, which initially glows red in standby, flashes to show you that commands are being received and acted upon. There’s a mute button on the remote should you wish for a swifter pause or restoration of output level.

Angela-Gilbert Yeung C312 Preamplifier $6300 Review

But no matter how I changed those dials (and I never did have to change any of them by more than a one-hour increment), the basic nature of the C312 remained consistent—clear and open, resolving, and detailed, with an excellent portrayal of space—and so, so quiet. If this preamplifier did not have those multiple gain stages, it would still be worthy of recommendation.

The inclusion of those gain stages means—without a doubt—that this preamp’s not for everyone. While I find the C312’s variable stages intriguing, I’m not certain I’d make sufficient use of them to make their inclusion in my system worthwhile. That said, the one time I did need it, the C312’s adjustability fixed a problem I’d likely have had to live with.

PS Audio Stellar Phono Preamplifier $2999 Review

Running the Gamut- PS Audio Stellar Phono Preamplifier

My last course of listening is much less conventional. Rather than switching to a second tone arm, I change the settings of the Stellar over to another turntable, as mentioned earlier. A bit of a departure from the $15,000 Triangle Art, my somewhat humbler Music Hall mmf1.3 is set up strictly for the purpose of playing 78s, complete with proper mono 78 needle and all.

First up, a release from July of 1946—Roy Acuff and His Crazy Tennesseans, “Great Speckled Bird” b/w “My Mountain Home Sweet Home.” Entering into this 75-year-old, monaural, high-revolution experience with no expectations, I lower the needle, and quickly sit down.

While scratchy and clearly showing every bit of age, what ends up coming forth from this record is truly a surprise. The Stellar Phono Preamplifier brings fresh life out of this recording, which now belies the antiquated single microphone in the room that was used to capture the three instruments and voices. There is an unexpected expansiveness from a disc that was originally played on a parlor Victrola. An illusion of stereo almost creeps in a time or two as vocal harmonies work in and out. I cannot resist but to dive deeper into my completely un-audiophile audiophile test.
