Greg Weaver’s Home Audio System

I should note that when it comes to what we hear in qualitative terms, Greg and I are of a single mind 95% of the time. Indeed, I marvel every time I describe to him the sound of a component that we have both heard, only to have him echo (down to the micro level) a nearly identical set of sonic impressions. Any points of sonic discord (a rarity) typically boil down to our different listening preferences, not to wholesale disagreements about what we have or haven’t heard objectively.
By the same token, Greg and I differ greatly over the kinds of music we use to evaluate systems and components, or for sheer enjoyment. Dr. Weaver inhabits a musical universe where the likes of Carlos Satana, David Bowie, Supertramp, Alan Parsons, and Papa Ludwig hold court. I live in the post-bob jazz multiverse, with a healthy dose of Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Bill Evans, and Charlie Mingus thrown in for good measure.

FOCAL UTOPIA OPEN-BACK HEADPHONE $5,000 REVIEW

Focal continues the use of pure Beryllium for the drive unit of the new Utopias. In this newest implementation, the driver is a 40mm “M” profile shaped dome. Similar in concept to the inverted dome tweeters found on many of Focal’s loudspeakers, this M-shaped driver allows for the use of a robust surround for better cone travel and a lower level of distortion coming from the center of the dome itself. Focal states that the driver is operated at full range with no other passive or active augmentation or correction.

Göbel High-End Divin Noblesse Loudspeaker $250,000 Review

The bass had a nice bit of extra bloom and color, although I wouldn’t characterize the speaker as having a “bottom-up” presentation. Rather, the Divin Noblesse delivered a satisfying fullness in the music’s foundation, from the power range in orchestral music to the visceral purr of a Fender Precision bass. It is common for speakers to sacrifice pitch precision and transient performance for this warmth and bloom, but that wasn’t the case with the Divin Noblesse. The speaker had superb resolution of bottom-end information, with no smearing of transients, blurring of pitch, or dilution of timbral detail

HIFIMAN SHANGRI-LA JR REVIEW
April 21, 2023 Comments Off on HIFIMAN SHANGRI-LA JR REVIEW
The mids perfectly connect to the bass and they share the same amount of body but also the character. Natural, but smooth that is. The mid timbre probably is the most impressive. Spaciousness, airiness and that bit of tube smoothness and warmth do it fr me here. The vocals are more to the front and the upper mids have a brighter, less smooth character. The typical vocal presentation doesn’t bother me in any way in this typical tuning, and it always keeps things exciting (but realistic).
The treble section is where the SHANGR-LA jr is less linear and starts getting peakier from around the 2K mark. It’s not so much an issue to me, and many fellow headphone enthusiasts like this typical tuning. Treble is never bright or sharp, but it is energetic, spacious and extends nicely.
