Anyone wanting to dive into the repertoire of Carl Philipp Emanuel (aka C.P.E.) Bach, one of the sons of the more famous JS Bach, was gifted a fine opportunity this spring when Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin published Symphonies – From Berlin To Hamburg [Harmonia Mundi 3149020950463; 96kHz/24-bit], the last C.P.E. album in a series that began over two decades ago. Symphony for Strings and Continuo in G major parades the light-and-shade contrasts typical of these post-Baroque works, and Chord’s amp deftly supported the mood shifts, going from delicate motifs to rousing set-pieces in a blink of the eye. Beneath the Ultima Integrated’s flamboyant exterior is an amp of serious, down-to-earth talent!

Marantz Model M1 £900 Review

In practice, subtle instrumental nuances, whether in the foreground or from supporting players in the background, would often ‘come to the front’ when the series was played through the M1. Additionally, the ability to switch from Direct or Stereo playback mode to a Virtual option via the HEOS app was a bit of a boon, ensuring excerpts from Gary Numan’s ‘Cars’ were laid more expansively in the room, albeit with an acceptable smudge of hotness added. It’s a nice extra on a dual-use amp like this, and while I know some will avoid this mode when listening to their classical or acoustic recordings, here it makes sense.

ZMF Aegis $3,499 Review
November 9, 2024 Comments Off on ZMF Aegis $3,499 Review
The Aegis price starts at $3,499.99 USD and can go up depending on the extra options you go for. It isn’t a cheap amplifier by any means, but it is a very versatile and well-built amplifier as you will see in this review. You can find the Aegis dedicated page here. You can buy the Aegis from ZMF’s shop directly here. The Aegis – according to ZMF – will be shipped within a period of 2 to 5 business days for 120V customers – while all 230/240v units will ship directly from Cayin within ten days. In Europe you can buy the 220V version of Aegis with the obligatory CE Certification for €4.099 Euro from one of ZMF’s dealers. As the Aegis originally is a DIY amplifier, it still is possible to build it yourself. That is unless you have two left hands, like me.

B&W 705 S3 Signature £3400 Review

The 705 S3 Signature has the sort of all-round performance charm you expect from a B&W speaker, its sound being rich, energetic and suited to any genre. At the same time, the skill with which it crafts detailed, authentic images, and its ability to pick out the tiniest of musical details, makes its premium price seem entirely worthwhile. Design and build are superb too – you just need to pick a colour. Me? Midnight Blue.

Many high-end audio speakers can stray from the essence of the music. Despite technical sophistication, exotic components, and marketing claims, they often sound like a collection of drivers that shuffle notes in a kaleidoscopic way, producing unpleasant listening fatigue.
In contrast, the Silent Pound Challenger II speakers offer a harmonious and sympathetic union of well-researched technologies, drivers, crossovers, and enclosure design

The digital counter offers two modes: 1) counter, and 2) time. The displayed time is calculated from the current meter reading. The meter speed and the meter reading are used to determine the set belt speed of 19 cm/s or 38 cm/s, and the meter reading is then converted into a belt running time corresponding to the belt speed.
Additionally, the “precisely calibrated” Revox VU meters have long scales, and an LED immediately indicates the risk of overdriving. The display also works during playback. Expansion options include a multiuser adapter global cache available for the integration of the B77 MK III and the control in a Revox multiuser audio solution.

Métronome AQWO 2 Hybrid DAC + SACD/CD + Streamer Review

The ESOTERIC SACD of Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 (originally released on Philips in 1963) is a spectacular example of ESOTERIC’s famous remastering for compact discs (their new vinyl remasterings are superb, too). The London Symphony Orchestra sounds dramatic and very beautiful as guided by Pierre Monteux. All instruments’ timbral cues are wonderful via ESOTERIC mastering and the AQWO 2’s advanced DAC, but those soaring violins are sweet and when things get thick in the mix like the famous viola syncopations in the first movement, the AQWO 2 unravels things easily. This was luxury SACD playback.

Noble FoKus Triumph Wireless $369 Review

The packaging includes a finely designed plastic ear tips container featuring Noble’s logo, containing both wide-bore single-flange tips and more stubby double-flange tips, much like what was provided with the Mystique. Additionally, a nicely made velvet pouch is provided to protect the Alcantara charging case from drops. As for charging, you get a USB-A to USB-C cable, and due to the slightly recessed USB-C port on the case, Noble includes a C-female to C-male adapter, allowing you to charge the case with standard USB-C cables, which typically have a shorter connector length.

Topping D50 III & A50 III $229 Review
November 2, 2024 Comments Off on Topping D50 III & A50 III $229 Review
The agility of the D50 III really stood out during my listening sessions, making it feel like it has excellent control over the frequency spectrum, especially in complex genres. Whether I was listening to fast-paced heavy metal tracks or instrumental pieces, the D50 III impressed me. The D50 III punches well above its weight.
I have a D90 III Discrete sitting next to it, which is undoubtedly a more refined and resolving DAC; the D50 III still holds its ground. While the D90 has clear advantages in terms of depth, tonal realism, and overall resolution, the D50 III gives you around 80% of the D90’s performance at a fraction of the cost (around 20% of the D90’s price). This is hard to ignore, especially for the budget audiophile.
