The R2 table measures 44 x 12 x 35cm (w/h/d), weighs 10kg, and is equipped with height-adjustable feet. Like the R2’s chassis, its 24mm platter is made of solid surface material, and is said to “guarantee detailed reproduction thanks to its low-resonance, homogeneous structure.”
The R2’s synchronous motor is mounted on the lower layer, separately from the platter bearing and tonearm. It is controlled by motor electronics developed in-house at Luphonic — with which, the company states, both the amplitude and the phase shift of the two sine waves are individually adapted to the built-in motor. This is said to “ensure an extremely quiet and low-vibration drive.”

ROTEL RB-1582 MKII STEREO AMPLIFIER $1999 REVIEW

Rather than testing total harmonic distortion at full scale at 1kHz as many do, I prefer to understand what the amplifier is doing over a broader range of frequencies and at a more reasonable output level. So, I do a frequency sweep from 10Hz to 20kHz at 5 watts RMS into 8Ω instead. For reference, 5 watts will usually produce somewhere between 85-105dB sound pressure level depending on the connected speaker’s efficiency. I personally find 85dB to be quite loud for extended listening sessions. (I usually listen in the 75-80dB range for longer sessions to protect against hearing damage.) At 5-watt levels, we see that total harmonic distortion is dominated by 3rd-order products up to about 2.5kHz where 2nd-order distortion takes over. At 20kHz, distortion is about 0.04% which is very close to the manufacturer’s published <0.03% THD.

HiFi Rose RS150 Review

Turning the wick up a touch, the thrill of the orchestra at full speed in the Scherzo of the Fourth Symphony sees the RS150 start to let its hair down and party. Similarly, switching to something a little different in the shape of Tame Impala’s Lonerism album sees the hard-driving pop shown in the best possible light. From the thumping percussion of the intro to Be Above It, the music surges out with supreme thump and punch, carving persuasive instrumental textures without overly deconstructing the wash of sound. Pleasingly, the results appear to remain broadly the same regardless of whether music is streamed via the network, the internal drive, the digital inputs or as a Roon endpoint. The performance remains consistently rich, dynamic and rewarding with only that slightly soft soundstage focus holding it back in any way – and this only seems to be in evidence on particularly atmospheric recordings such as church-recorded choral (which can sound a tad dry) and simply miked jazz in reverberant studio acoustics.

Digging into my cabinet of tweaks I came up with enough 70mm square damping feet from Soundeck to put one under each corner of the subs and at each corner of the bridges. In the photo below you can see the footer excess protruding from the sides. The thickness of the sides of the bridge is only 18mm, so there is not much material to anchor a footer unless the sides are reinforced with additional material. Each Soundeck footer, however, could be cut to create three 70mm strips to attach under the length of the sides of the bridge. Even on the soft carpeted surface, this made a noticeable improvement with virtually no increase in speaker height.

Sonus Faber Suprema

I returned the next day for the second listening session and this time had the demo room to myself. Cucuzza was steeped in meetings that day, so I got Passarelli to configure the system for me for streaming. I wanted to stream some of my favorite audition tracks from Qobuz, via Roon, a music roster that would be familiar to readers of my reviews: Bruce Cockburn’s “Pacing the Cage,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” Dominique Fils-Aimé’s “Birds,” Ani DiFranco’s “Everest,” Cowboy Junkies’ “Sweet Jane” and “Misguided Angel,” a selection of songs by Lana Del Rey, a few from Olivia Rodrigo, including “Enough for You” again, and some tracks that I hadn’t heard in a long while. Later that day Cucuzza was able to join me, and I thought I’d play AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” for him. People are often surprised by the quality of this recording, and Cucuzza was too. He was particularly impressed by the sonic image of the drum kit, which he felt was just the right size. At the volume level this music demands, many speakers flounder on the wailing guitars and hard-hitting drums. The Suprema did not. It kept playing cleanly, with neither strain nor distortion, begging to be played louder and louder. But it’s easy to curb the temptation because the Suprema doesn’t need to be played loud to sound good—it sounds great at any volume level!
