It produced a coherent, controlled, natural, highly resolving sound that was free of ear-jabbing frequency peaks, yet was dynamic and tonally succinct. Its consummate transparency and well-balanced, well-ordered overall sound made it a perfect fit for all types of music, as well as various types and levels of equipment. Italy may be hot as blazes at this moment in the height of summer here in 2023, but the PH-5 is a cool customer with a natural, music-loving sound. In short, the Gold Note PH-5 looks to be quite the golden choice for your next phono preamp.

VPI’s Goldy cartridge illustrates the potential subjective impact of what are, on the face of it, simple mechanical revisions. Naturally, Audio-Technica’s ‘donor chassis’ is already in the top drawer, but VPI’s tweaks have resulted in something of a giant-killer. The Goldy retains the tracking prowess and medium output of the AT-OC9 but adds a silkiness and refinement all its own. If you own a VPI deck, it’s a slam dunk.

Though I did not find the low frequencies necessarily anemic or loose, I did experiment with placing a 16″ x 20″ oak platform underneath each cabinet to observe any contrasts in low-frequency focus vs my thick-pile carpeting. The boards did, in fact, provide a noticeable tautness in low frequencies, and at the same time, provide for enhanced definition of organic bass instrumental sources.

The Core Power EQUI=CORE 1800 MK3 is a solid improvement over the previous MK2. The inclusion of the six gold plated copper duplexes by default and their new Wide Band Balanced Power Transformer made the unit perform better then I remembered the MK2 performing. In my testing, I was able to clearly hear a positive difference with the EQUI=CORE in my system, versus out of my system. I even loved it when it was combined with my PS Audio P12.
Power Conditioning and Conditioners can be incredibly expensive. I highly suggest that before you go out and spend a small fortune on a power conditioner, that you at least start with the Core Power EQUI=CORE 1800 MK3. It is candidly better then most products out there at its retail price, and keeps up with products 2—3x its retail price. Thank you as always Core Power and Underwood HiFi. It was a real pleasure reviewing your power conditioner.

The Audio Note UK Cobra didn’t scrimp on musical weight, which can be an issue with a relatively low-powered tube amplifier. Bass was always natural and full, with plenty of tangible edges around the notes. On 2L Recordings’ new Trio Mediaeval performance, An Old Hall Ladymass, I heard that weight even though we are talking mostly about a women’s choir backed by an organetto. When those voices are merged together, there should be an increase in the visceral impact of the music–we’re talking “strength in numbers” in its purest apparition.
That’s where the Audio Note UK Cobra made its personality clear–those pieces of music that represent two opposing performances, and how beauty can be found right at the intersection when they collide. If you turn noise canceling off those numbers go up to 12 hours for the earbuds with 24 additional hours off the charging case, for 36 hours total! But the company is quick to note that performance will vary based on settings, environment, storage, usage, and that over time the capacity of the battery will degrade so Sony does not guarantee these numbers, but the point is that you do get a long playtime out of even a single charge, despite the diminutive size, more than enough for example to cover transcontinental flight.
