KIWI EARS ORCHESTRA LITE REVIEW

August 3, 2023 Comments Off on KIWI EARS ORCHESTRA LITE REVIEW

In terms of fit and comfort, the Orchestra Lite is very good and fully met my expectations. Despite their relatively large shell size, they fit snugly and comfortably in my ears without any discomfort. However, as with any large earphones, fit can be subjective and vary from person to person, so it’s a good idea to try them on before you buy, especially if you have small ears.

WOO AUDIO WA7E DAC/TUBE ELECTROSTATIC HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER $1,399 REVIEW

August 2, 2023 Comments Off on WOO AUDIO WA7E DAC/TUBE ELECTROSTATIC HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER $1,399 REVIEW

My final thought is this, like its brother the WA7 Fireflies, with a huge three-dimensional soundstage, a linear tonal balance down to 15Hz, natural timbre to the instruments, the speed and detail of an electrostatic, with plenty of dynamic range the Woo Audio WA7e DAC/Tube Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier punches way above its weight class.

Focal Utopias Review

August 2, 2023 Comments Off on Focal Utopias Review

The new Focal Utopias certainly qualify as some of the best-sounding headphones that I have heard to date. It almost pains me to admit it actually because just when I think that there is no way headphone sound can improve, along comes something like the new Utopias to make me grudgingly readjust my expectations. They honestly do it all and do it extremely well. Out of the dozens of headphones I’ve reviewed over the years, I can count on one hand those that I consider reference class headphones to judge all others by. I am adding the new Utopias to that list. In a nutshell, it threads the needle between a balanced, natural sound presentation, with just enough extra “spice” added to make it a fun and enjoyable listening experience. Coupled with the tasteful styling and practical comfort enhancements and these headphones can’t help to be a winner. They sound as “alive” as I’ve ever heard a headphone sound. That alone makes them worth the cost of admission.

Dan D’Agostino Master Audio Systems Progression Integrated Amplifier Review

August 1, 2023 Comments Off on Dan D’Agostino Master Audio Systems Progression Integrated Amplifier Review

Regardless of the Aurender N-10 or the DAC utilized, there were several consistent findings in all my listening sessions for the Progression linestage on its own. Starting from the bottom up, bass performance via the Progression is now my new benchmark for integrated amplifiers. It also gave my VAC preamp and Pass Labs monoblocks a good run for the money. As stated in my most recent reviews, I have been very impressed with both the Aavik I-580 and the Boulder 866 integrated amplifiers for many excellent reasons – especially their performance in the lower frequencies. Both set standards at the time, but the Progression provides even more definition and slam, and even less low end overhang. Tight, tight, and more tight, but without a loss of harmonic texture and proper tone. Yes, bass performance can have harmonic texture and proper tone when done right! The Progression took a vice like grip on my Sonus Faber Strads and never let go.

SPL Diamond USB DAC Review

It might be the most basic digital device in SPL’s ‘Professional Fidelity’ range of consumer products, but the Diamond DAC is both superb-sounding and something of a high-end bargain. By focusing on essential flexibility only – no fiddly filters! – the company has come up with a design that’s both easy to use and capable of excellent performance across a wide sweep of musical genres.

Auralic Aries G1.1 Music Library/Server Review

This lightness of touch is a hallmark of the Aries G1.1’s sound, or rather lack of sound, as it gets out of the way of the music, concentrating on serving it up conveniently and letting the rest of your system do its stuff. It does so as convincingly with the simple, airy sound of Third Reel’s Many More Days jazz set [ECM 2431] as it does with the mighty Christopher Jacobson/Orchestre de la Suisse Romande recording of the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony [Pentatone PTC5186638].

Here the sheer power of the solo instrument is unleashed without restraint in the final movement. In other words, whatever you play, the Aries G1.1 delivers, and when you add in its storage flexibilities, it’s quite an all-rounder.

MCINTOSH MC8207 MULTICHANNEL AMPLIFIER $7,000 REVIEW

July 31, 2023 Comments Off on MCINTOSH MC8207 MULTICHANNEL AMPLIFIER $7,000 REVIEW

In my experience, McIntosh components have a signature house sound consisting of a rich midrange, clean, sweet treble, and potent bass output. The MC8207 fits this description to a “T.” This voicing really flatters well-recorded music and makes it easy to “bond” with the overall sound. It also helps make poorly recorded music far more enjoyable. There is an effortless nature to the sound which encourages you to just sit back, relax, and enjoy your music or movie. As an added bonus, the MC8207 truly complemented my Sonus faber Olympica speakers and created an overall beautiful (but not overly lush) sound that I personally loved. Minor quips about the slight power supply buzz and inability to completely dim the front panel aside, the McIntosh MC8207 is an excellent-sounding amplifier for a top-tier multichannel system. While fantastic with movie soundtracks, I feel it is even better with more demanding music sources, be they 2-channel or multichannel. This is a multichannel amp that even a hardcore 2-channel audiophile would be hard-pressed to find fault with. If you are looking to build a top-flight multichannel system, the McIntosh MC8207 is certainly worth a closer look

Audio-Technica AT-LP2022 Fully Manual Belt-Drive 60th Anniversary Turntable

July 30, 2023 Comments Off on Audio-Technica AT-LP2022 Fully Manual Belt-Drive 60th Anniversary Turntable

The placement of the turntable is also salient. I’ve noticed on my wood floor, stability can be an issue, but not for these two turntables. The AT-LP2022 never flinched when I got close to it —there was no distortion or skipping and tonearm and carts flowed. With more of a neutral sound than a warm one, the AT-LP2022 was my go-to turntable for almost half a year when my Levinson was in the shop.

Some of my favourite moments with the AT-LP2022 were when my family would come and visit my home, they all would stare at the turntable, focusing on the looks of the AT-LP. The prism that you can catch at almost every angle, the city-like image you see when looking at it directly from the side through the crystal-clear plinth and platter, with little screws and electronics that look like skyscrapers and buildings. Audio-Technica complemented a stable and ready-to-rock turntable with a formidable design. Turntables always set out to make a statement whether it’s a heavy platter/chassis or dynamics. I think the AT-LP2022 combines the looks, the feel and the sonics at an excellent price ($1200 incl. arm and two cartridges).

PEARS MC-8 REVIEW

July 30, 2023 Comments Off on PEARS MC-8 REVIEW

At present, you can’t choose any shell colors with the MC-8 since it’s completely black without any options. For the faceplates, you can choose from 34 possibilities. My favorites are genuine wood faceplates like I requested for the SH-3 model before, but they cost more which I’ll mention below. You also have 4 different options for the stock cable, 2-pin, or MMCX.
If you have special & specific requests apart from those, I’m sure they can get it done for you. I always say I like slick and simple designs in terms of CIEMs, therefore I’m very happy with my pair. But surely some companies are way ahead on the customization side of things.
My sample has a dark fashion with a black shell and black faceplate. The metallic blue P-EAR-S logo tops the design nicely. With all of my other CIEMs, I chose to have clear shells with some combination of faceplates, but this design of the PEARS MC-8 looks subtle and unassuming which is nice and easy to wear without much attention from the crowd. It oozes business and seriousness overall.
