SIVGA Oriole $200 Review

November 28, 2022 Comments Off on SIVGA Oriole $200 Review

In their marketing materials, SIVGA promised the Oriole would have “a smooth, balanced, rich sound with a wide soundstage, good instrument separation, and high-resolution clarity.” After listening to these headphones for some time now, I think they made good on a lot of what they promised.

Vivid Audio Kaya S12 $6900 Review

November 28, 2022 Comments Off on Vivid Audio Kaya S12 $6900 Review

Vivid Audio’s Kaya S12 flat-out caught me off guard—not an easy thing to do given the number of two-ways I’ve road tested over the years. Nonetheless, few compacts have managed to achieve the overall sense of midrange balance, tonal verisimilitude, and seat-of-the-pants musicality of the Kaya S12. Within its limits it offered an unfiltered, uncolored window on the music. Its whimsical appearance belies a serious engineering effort to extend the capabilities of the small loudspeaker segment. An impressive achievement and a joy to listen to.

Audio Analogue Bellini Anniversary and Donizetti Anniversary £11,000 Review

November 27, 2022 Comments Off on Audio Analogue Bellini Anniversary and Donizetti Anniversary £11,000 Review

The spectre of audio’s rose-tinted view of the past should be exorcised. We sometimes prize those classic big pre/power combinations from the 1980s, but if we listened to them today on a level playing field, I suspect a few of the Anointed Ones of audio wouldn’t hold a candle to this Audio Analogue pairing. It’s gentle, refined and sophisticated touch with music – that not only rolls with the punches but can also deliver a neat haymaker when required – is extremely alluring, especially for those who do not simply choose audiophile-approved recordings. The Audio Analogue Bellini Anniversary and Donizetti Anniversary is the pre/power combo that puts a smile on your face.

Bowers & Wilkins Px8 $699 Review

November 27, 2022 Comments Off on Bowers & Wilkins Px8 $699 Review

Overall, the Bowers & Wilkins Px8 are hugely capable performers that justify their price with a combination of build and sound quality that cheaper alternatives just can’t match. Apple’s AirPods Max may have kick-started the market for higher-end wireless noise-cancelling headphones but, to our ears, these B&Ws deliver even more in the way of musical insight and enjoyment.

There are some niggles but nothing that comes close to denting our enthusiasm for these headphones. They are a fine effort that deserve serious consideration if you are buying at this level.

Arylic S50 Pro+ Pre-amp / Streamer / DAC Review

For sure, at this price point you can’t expect neither DSD/DXD support nor Hi-Res digital outputs, and you may come to limits with you 5000+ digital library. ROON or Apple music isn’t supported, and it does not offer HDMI-ARC support. Ah yes, this ATMOS is sincerely out of reach. As usual, you can get an advanced DAC, better streaming, better network connection, better APPs … just not with the same budget and the same ease of use.

Nonetheless, I would love to see the device receiving upgrades with a more recent Wi-Fi module and a better DAC chip, changes we could already encounter with the UP2Stream HD DAC, which is up next for review in my Sonic Encounters blog here on Audiophile Style. Advancements regarding the App performance might be the sweet cherry on the cake, thus you are free to use the performant WIIM app instead.

WESTONE AUDIO MACH 80 $1,599 REVIEW

November 26, 2022 Comments Off on WESTONE AUDIO MACH 80 $1,599 REVIEW

The Westone Audio Mach 80 provides impressive passive isolation thanks to its shape and optimized tips. Naturally, the included foam ear tips provide more isolation compared to the silicone tips, but I didn’t feel the need for more isolation as it was already excellent. Foam tips may be more suitable for on-stage and outdoor use.

To summarize this section in one sentence; the Mach 80 offers an improved design and an improved material quality compared to the previous generation, while not compromising on the comfort we all love and got used to.

Estelon XB Diamond Mk.2 loudspeaker $58,000 Review

November 24, 2022 Comments Off on Estelon XB Diamond Mk.2 loudspeaker $58,000 Review

How’s the maximum volume? More than ample for my needs—I never came close to running out of power—though I’m not sure I’d choose speakers with ceramic membranes as party speakers. These are too good for that anyway.

And the bass? Ample quantity, approaching full-range depth while perhaps not quite plumbing the lowest reaches. Certainly, the bass was present at full volume down to the bottom note on acoustic or electric bass (41.2Hz), and it comes very close to full volume down to the lowest notes on a standard grand piano (27.5Hz). Acoustic (double) bass was lively and articulate. On tracks with lots of bass—I’m thinking of EDM tracks like Cristoph’s “Reachin’,” from Consequence of Society Vol.1 (16/44.1 FLAC, Noir Music/Tidal), the bass is fun, although the XB Diamond Mk IIs don’t quite provide the bass massage of the big-sister Forzas. In a room smaller than mine, perhaps they would.

In addition to handling MQA files, the SL-G700M2 supports WAV/AIFF playback up to 384 kHz/32 bit, FLAC/ALAC up to 384 kHz/24 bit, and DSD up to 11.2 MHz.

Everything is housed in a robust aluminium chassis that isolates the power supply, digital interface, analog circuitry, and disc mechanisms in separate sections to prevent signal interference and degradation. Vibration damping and a disc tray made of die-cast aluminium are employed to ensure high-precision disc playback.

Heavenly Soundworks Five17 $10,000 Review

November 22, 2022 Comments Off on Heavenly Soundworks Five17 $10,000 Review

As designers get more control over frequency response and radiation pattern, it becomes more and more clear that they are not all aiming at the same thing. This situation makes it even more important that one listens carefully for oneself. No one else can walk that path for you, of trying to decide what you want your speakers to do. The Five17s present a distinctive view and a definite philosophy of how a loudspeaker should behave. It is surely worth checking them out—there is not much else around like them, since most DSP designers are going via the narrow-pattern controlled-directivity route and for a slight, or not so slight, downslope in on-axis response. The Five17s do neither of those things but present a different view of neutral sound, and one which can be convincing, indeed. Your choice. What they do, they do very well, and in a remarkably small and elegant package.

Western Electric Type No.91E integrated amplifier $14,999 Review

November 21, 2022 Comments Off on Western Electric Type No.91E integrated amplifier $14,999 Review

https://www.stereophile.com/content/western-electric-type-no91e-integrated-amplifier

Charles Whitener’s claims about his Western Electric 91E integrated amplifier were spot on: The 91E does deliver a “solid low end and extended highs,” and it does have the “clarity of the original WE 91A’s midrange” and the ability to create an “incredible soundstage.”

The 91E is not your traditional treble-and-midrange-champ SET amplifier. In delivering more strength and power without compromising the low end, it’s a classy machine that can frame music neutrally in a large soundstage. The 91E elicited consistent musical pleasure. Western Electric is back.
