The Stealth’s 4lb, viscous-elastomer–damped, die-cast aluminum platter is topped by a 1/16″-thick, slightly hard, slightly sticky rubber platter mat, which bugged me due to its propensity to attract and hold dust. For comparison, the mat on the original Technics SL-1200 (which I still have and now use on my PLX-1000) is 3/16″ thick, much softer, and doesn’t collect dust. The Stealth’s S-shaped aluminum tonearm sports a light, detachable headshell that does not allow for azimuth adjustment. The arm is specified to accept cartridges weighing 6–10gm—more when the included subweight is installed. Its thick cylindrical arm-pillar housing features a “window” for viewing the movements of the arm’s calibrated (in mm) arm pillar. At the top of this housing is a knurled, 1.5″-diameter knob that allows adjustment of VTA even while a record is playing. A thick, side-mounted lock nut secures the arm in place.

KEF LSX II Wireless Speaker System Review$1,400 Review

Otherwise, day-to-day operation of the LSX II speaker system was a snap, whether streaming from the KEF Connect app or directly from the “native” Qobuz or Tidal apps on my iPad mini. (Though I confess this can get a bit confusing—which app is this, anyway?) Most users will be perfectly happy using KEF’s app. It has all of the expected music-streaming features—playlists, “favorites,” and the like—and is about as simple and intuitive as one can expect in this decidedly un-simple age. That said, I must observe that there are no physical controls on the LSX II speakers themselves apart from the pairing and reset buttons on the rear of the main speaker. So if the KEF remote—which provides volume, input, and play/pause/skip controls—is lost in the sofa cushions and your phone or tablet was forgotten at the office…
Lastly, the Connect app lacks any tone controls, per se. If you choose the “Expert” setup mode you can effectively adjust treble, midrange, and bass by a few dB each, but you must first dig deep into the 104-page PDF owner’s manual to learn how these correlate to “Desk Mode,” “Wall Mode,” treble Trim, and Bass Extension; this is probably done by design to discourage ham-thumbed users from screwing up the LSX II’s carefully created native balance.

ATC SCM50 Passive/Active Loudspeaker $25,999 Review

This pair of ATC SCM50s was quite simply one of the most breathtakingly revealing sets of loudspeakers I have ever heard. According to my definition of what constitutes high-end sound, these loudspeakers utterly excelled across all parameters, and I believe this is no coincidence. The SCM50 was designed from the outset as a recording engineer’s scalpel; its task was to reveal every unwanted creak of a chair or surplus open microphone channel, and to permit forensic analysis of a singer’s performance or technique. In Making Rumours, Caillat describes how they chose which microphone to use for Nicks’s lead vocals on “Dreams.” He set up around eight top-class vocal microphones on a long line of booms in the live room of the Record Plant studio in Sausalito, California, and asked her to sing into each one in turn. It was quickly apparent to both of them that the Sennheiser 441 best suited Nicks’s voice, and it became her microphone of choice. It’s the incredible transparency and openness of studio monitors that allows such differences to be discerned, and I believe it is the combination of ATC’s studio heritage and superlative engineering that makes the SCM50 such an exceptional loudspeaker for the home.

Lavardin ITx20 £11,500 Review
November 3, 2022 Comments Off on Lavardin ITx20 £11,500 Review
Those who evaluate amplifiers like it’s a game of Top Trumps will never ‘grok’ Lavardin because a 55W, four-input amplifier that doesn’t even have a balance control doesn’t hit their spec buttons, and the presence of notionally the same product for thousands less will send them apoplectic. On the other hand, if you listen to the Lavardin ITx there is nothing remotely close to what it does… and the ITx 20 does it a lot better. If you want a valve amplifier but don’t want valves, listen to the Lavardin ITx. And if you like the ITx, only listen to the ITx 20 if you have that kind of money to hand. Because you just might not be satisfied with anything else.

VTL S-200 Signature Stereo Amplifier $12,500 Review

That said, there’s a slight price to pay for this extra musicality. Although the KT88s are capable of cranking more volume than the 6550s in triode mode, they don’t quite match that tube complement’s tetrode muscle. So, one will, on occasion—especially if in a mood to crank some heavier rock—cause a tube to draw excess current, which activates the fault-sensing system to protect the amplifier by shutting down. A deck-mounted LED next to each of the output tubes indicates which one is having a problem, and rebooting takes about a minute. Now and then a tube may completely fail, requiring replacement, but that’s rare and, in any case, is something all tubes are prone to.

Tannoy Stirling Prestige Gold Reference loudspeaker $6990 Review

Like other speakers I’ve reviewed that have horn-loaded drive units, the Tannoy Stirling Prestige Gold Reference is fast, plays with marvelous dynamics, and presents a full, believable, densely populated soundstage. It requires careful setup, but once that’s done, it rewards with excellent transparency, fine treble resolution, good midrange and bass fundamentals, and impressive textures. I’d go so far as to say that the Stirling, which just had its first price increase since 2013, is a bargain. Considering the adjustability of its treble output to accommodate different room sizes and conditions, the Stirling is an easy speaker to love.
Despite changes at the company, the Tannoy legacy continues with the Stirling, which proudly carries the torch for a classic, timeless design.

FIIO FH7S REVIEW

There are a lot of ear-tips inside, a total of 16 pairs. 2 of them are foams, and 2 more pairs are bi-flange tips. There are additional 9 pairs of silicone tips which are divided into “bass”, “vocal” and “balanced”. On top of all that, you get SpinFit tips for the flagship hybrid IEM. These weren’t present with the lower range FH5s model.
The tips are easily recognizable since they all have different colours. Once you memorize their colour you know which is which. Overall FiiO has covered the accessory part very well and you have absolutely everything you need inside. You even have an MMCX tool for making the detachable cable easier to work. Great attention to detail. Overall this is excellent packaging with a great presentation.

SPL Elector/Performer s1200 Pre/Power Amplifier £2399/£6499 Review

From the simplicity of Matei Varga’s The Year That Never Was set [Sono Luminus DSL-92258; DSD128], with its solo piano works – the instrument rendered with gorgeous vibrancy – to the crisp Dausgaard/Swedish Chamber Orchestra recording of Brahms’s First Symphony [BIS 1756, 44.1kHz/24-bit], these SPL amplifiers are a revelation.
They seem able to deliver realistic weight and power while still keeping rhythms tight and the musical flow unstoppable. Although the Varga album shows a battered upright on the cover, his piano is beautifully captured in a lively studio atmosphere, while the Dausgaard recording shows a lightness of touch not common with what can become a real orchestral potboiler. And then there’s the conductor – taking the piece at a thrilling pace, while still building skilfully to the big theme in the symphony’s final movement.

ATLANTIC TECHNOLOGY FS-BTWS582 HEADPHONES $499 REVIEW

One odd thing I found (and this may just be me) but I found wearing the headphones backward to be far more comfortable when listening for extended periods of time. In the normal mode, they sat too far back on my head and felt like they were sliding back, pulling on my head. In reverse, they sit near perfectly at the top of my head. Let me know in the comments if you own a pair and have tried this out.
