“Feed them some large-scale classical music in the form of Holst’s Jupiter and the R5s have no trouble generating high volume levels with impressive composure. They sound so refined, clean and composed when pushed that there’s always a temptation to go higher, which is great as long as you have understanding neighbours.
We’re impressed by the R5s’ stereo imaging. They deliver an expansive but superbly focused soundstage, one that locks sounds and instruments in place even when the music becomes complex. The use of a Uni-Q arrangement means that the imaging stays coherent even when we’re not in the optimum listening position, which is something to bear in mind if you don’t like to be locked to just a single listening spot.”

“Do not expect planar levels of low-end rumble and physically but do expect better than expected punch and body for an electrostatic headphone. In fact, outside of the VOCE and 007 MKII, I find the SR-L300 Limited bass response to be one of the better tunings out there. ON the FR there is a slight bump from around 80-100Hz and extends to about 200-250hz before it gently drops to the start of the lower-mids.”

“The level of clarity and detail retrieval they provide is about as best as I have heard from a passive loudspeaker. Vocal reproduction is equally flawless and about as uncolored as I have come across. Bass response was deep, potent and detailed, especially when tempered with just the right amount of room correction in my case. Soundstage reproduction and off-axis response are equally impressive, so you don’t have to be in the sweet spot all of the time. Practically speaking, they have no real weaknesses that I can divine. That makes them a benchmark in my book when it comes to stereo speakers. I don’t know what Keven Voecks and the folks at Revel have in mind to top the F228Be when the sights turn to update the Ultima2 line. But until that fateful day, and if financial fortune should ever smile upon me”

“Here is an example, Hugo 2 has a max voltage output of about 3 VRMS, so the current draw at 15 ohms will be 0.2A and the power output will be 0.6W. This enough to cause serious damage to ears with LCD-4Z whose sensitivity is 98db/mW, even if the listening at half the volume (1.5V), LCD-4Z would be very loud with a lot of headroom to spare. Now compare that with With LCD-4 with 200 ohm impedance, the current draw would be 0.015A and a max power draw of about 0.045W. Yes the LCD-4 would draw less current (an order of magnitude less), but it would not be anywhere as loud even at the maximum volume as the power into LCD-4 would also be an order of magnitude less. Though no one would listen even at maximum volumes, at normal listening levels the extra headroom is needed to accommodate the transients and dynamic range of music.”

Nothing I’ve ever had the privilege of lifting the cover on in the audio world is built to this standard. This is what gives Boulder products the highest secondary market value of anything going – if you can even find them used. I’m sure people that trade Boulder in for something else are out there, but every Boulder owner I’ve encountered has only traded up. It’s rarely if ever for sale used, and I’ve never heard of one that has malfunctioned. I don’t even recall seeing a service area when I visited the factory, but I’m sure it’s there somewhere.”

“Unlike many of the other true wireless headphones I’ve heard, the 1More Stylish TWS earphones sound very musical out the gate. And there’s no app and equalizer to fumble with – because you don’t need it. It also supports AptX! Bonus points there.
The tuning of the 1More Stylish is obviously towards the bass region. You won’t get a lot of shimmer, sizzle, or shine but you’ll get plenty of punchy bass, rich vocals, and a much meatier sound. You would think everything would sound smeared and veiled – but it isn’t. It’s refreshing given how thin and brittle these other true wireless earphones sound.”

“Through the ERA-1 the album was laid bare with the recorded space around the two bassists creating a huge sound stage in every axis while the two uprights alternated in their crazily-tilted responses to one another (from what you think a bass should sound like to something from a science-fiction horror film soundtrack – and everything in between) and I was held rapt by how well the ERA-1 was able to delineate between each player’s left, pitch-producing hands and their right hands manipulating tone. Weight, heft and air pressure from arm and body movements were conveyed with realism critical to believability in its midrange emphasis.”
