“Eventually, when you get past being enthralled by the sound of the system, you can begin to point to its strengths. The most obvious is the speed of delivery, and it’s that speed that makes you so enthralled with music. Listening to Richard Thompson’s guitar playing requires a system that can translate his dexterity, or potentially ruin the performance. Here, the Stax pair shine, and it’s like the man is playing live in your listening room. That speed doesn’t just apply to fast folk guitarists, it is needed universally; when you experience it, it’s hard to break away from its thrall. Other systems – even supposedly fast ones – sound sluggish by comparison.”

“Even bass was improved by the QKore. Bass, let’s face it, is probably the most difficult sonic region to produce faithfully. One of the most treacherous aspects, I think, is pitch stability in the nether areas. It’s easy to hear when a loudspeaker begins to compress or wobble on lower-octave notes. On some of my favorite Maurice André recordings on Erato of trumpet and organ, for instance, you simply hear greater air around the deep organ notes and more focused pitches. On Leonard Cohen’s final album You Want It Darker, the depth and refulgence and sonority of the bass adds immense dimensionality to the proceedings.”

“The midrange is excellent and presents most vocal cleanly, with a large dose of warmth and richness. The upper bass and midrange is very good in the Triton Seven which presents this range with very high resolution and good dynamics, although micro-dynamics in the upper midrange are not proficient as in the lower frequencies. This makes the upper midrange, just below where the ribbon tweeter takes over, sound relatively anemic and thin compared to the lower midrange. Even so, the sound seems generally correct and linear from upper bass to lower treble. The midrange is of such good quality that it seemed that Bonnie Raitt visited my listening room, virtually, on “Cool Clear Water” from her 1994 Longing In Their Hearts CD. Also on that cut is an easy to follow bass line, with a very dynamic drum set positioned perfectly toward the rear of the soundstage.”

“The Mark Levinson No.585 was an absolute pleasure to listen to. I found myself getting sucked into listening sessions that lasted much longer than anticipated. Many times, I wound up listening to an entire album, even though I only sat down to listen to one or two tracks. The No.585 is well balanced and neutral, both in tonality and its ability to control speakers, while providing lots of power. Its detail and precision make for well-defined and precise soundstages. I found that the No.585’s soundstages were often smaller than those of systems that have more diffuse imaging, but I suspect that the No.585 is probably more accurate in this regard. Overall, if you are looking for an integrated amplifier and DAC that will maximize the performance of your both digital and line-level sources, the No.585 is highly recommended. ”

“Bass Ports Open: the bass ports allow you to add an extra 4dB down low, this is mainly affects the sub-bass and I personally prefer the tighter and more controlled sound with the ports closed. I found the lows to lack a bit of focus when the ports are open, making them sound a tiny bit muddy. The only time I like the bass ports open is with more sub-bass oriented genres, and having the ability to adjust this is great.”

“Physically, the KANN uses simpler though no less attractive chassis construction than the ‘milled–from-billet’ premium-priced AK DAPs do. To help keep build costs in check, the KANN features an extruded aluminium chassis that is roughly trapezoidal in cross section and that is offered either in ‘Eos Blue’ or ‘Astro Silver”. The chassis is capped-off with top and bottom endplates treated to a black, rubber-like ‘soft feel’ finish. The top plate features single-ended and balanced headphone jacks and line stage output jacks plus a master On/Off switch, while the bottom plate provides SD and Micro SD memory card slots, a USB-C charging/data port, and a micro USB I/O port for digital audio data. ”

“Because I evaluated the STR full range, without a subwoofer, and only with a digital input, my setup was far simpler than the above discussion might imply. But with its ability to set up different inputs separately, use more than one setup for any input, pass along an analog input unaltered or convert it to digital for processing, and more, the STR is exceptionally flexible. I left most of the controls at their factory default settings, which meant that it took me about five minutes to get the STR up and running. Setting up ARC will take a little longer.”
