Both rich and articulate. Take also into account the immense output power, and you have one hell of a portable solution for anything you care to drive.”

“It’s a warm, dense, soft, fast and resolving sound, with the emphasis on the first three. We get a big soundstage, but without a clear depth – we have intimate contact with the performers and the foreground is the most important layer. On the other hand, the stage is spread wide, the sound is not squeezed into narrow space in front of us, it breaths and is unrestricted. They can work with any amplifier, although – I in my opinion – they should perform better when provided with more power. Their motto is: naturalness, naturalness and one more time naturalness. If this product came from some exotic Japanese manufacturer, it would cost twice as much, or more.”

“Twenty-three years ago, in a city far, far away, I purchased the most expensive, mahogany headphones in the world: the Grado RS1. They had been on the market just a year, garnering enormous critical acclaim, and were Grado’s first wood body cans, ever. It took me a year to scrape together the $695 and pay list price for these gems. They were delivered in a mahogany wood presentation case for the first year of production, which I missed getting by a month. Oh well…but they did supply an extension cord as a bonus. (Still not happy about losing out on the case.)

“I have no idea where my 24/96 FLAC file of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong performing “Summertime” came from, but the sound was delicious. Then again, this duo’s recordings are so resplendent in the midrange that it takes really poor equipment to make them sound less than great—so I was even more convinced of the ACI 600’s excellence by a recording of baritone Matthias Goerne singing “Meine Rose,” from Schumann’s Six Poems, Op.90, accompanied by pianist Markus Hinterhäuser on their recital Einsamkeit (24/96 WAV, Harmonia Mundi HMM 902243/HDtracks). Though I heard less transparency and detail in Goerne’s voice than I do through the far more expensive dCS rig, it was mesmerizingly sweet, warm, and expressive, and the piano sounded convincingly natural.”

“The Monitor Audio Silver 300 is an extremely accomplished product that offers a level of sound quality unexpected at this price. I was especially impressed by the fact that the overall design is so well balanced and complete. The speaker doesn’t excel in just one or two areas, but performs admirably across the board. Some similarly priced mini-monitors may have a lusher midband or silkier treble, but they won’t begin to match the Silver 300 in bass articulation, low-frequency extension, and dynamic contrasts. Moreover, the Silver 300 plays far bigger than its cabinet size, driver complement, and price would suggest, with robust dynamic authority. It’s also very easy to drive; the Esoteric F-03A’s 30Wpc was more than enough power.”
