“I hear no differences in staging size via the M5 through most other setups. That is a good thing. I expected far less realism but received a very good performer. This is funny, because, I do own a few streamers (which are video-enabled and not dedicated audio only like this M5 is) and the difference with some of them are apparent.
I can say that streaming services via my Roku are not half had at such a price and that the M5 sounds identical. What audio components are in there helping the signal boost, are quality.”

“Playing these two longtime reference recordings sent me down a rabbit hole. When I listened to The Trinity Session yet again, I was struck by how natural Margo Timmins’s voice sounded, and by all the air I could hear around it — a small but significant increase in resolution and clarity from what I’d heard with other amps. In The Mission, the sound of the woodwind instruments grabbed my attention — a breathy quality I hadn’t noticed before that made them sound more real, with a bit more presence. After having heard both recordings so many times over the years, I was surprised to hear something new. Which makes me think that while I’ve already spent several thousand words describing these amps, there may be still more to say about them — a telltale indication of a great hi-fi product.”

“The tonal balance is good, with a distinct emphasis on the bottom end, especially below 100 Hz, and a slight peak in the upper midrange giving it a bit of a bare studio sound. Wired operation offers pretty much the same sonic signature, with a tad more musical midrange and a larger soundstage in keeping with higher resolution sources. Overall, the E55BT Quincy offers much better than average performance for Bluetooth devices and can be scaled up with wired operation. A definite thumbs up”

Their exceptional dynamic competence had also been clearly apparent when listening to them drive the ground-breaking YG Acoustics Sonja XVs last fall. The speed and resolution they exhibited when recreating leading transients on percussion (and strings, piano, and horns) were revelatory, and their ability to deliver physical punch, producing chest-crushing impact from drum whacks or bass string snaps, was exhilarating.”

“Due to the strong bass and elevated upper mids, the lower midrange is a little lacking. The Sphear S is missing that fullness and warmth you get from the midrange, which gives the overall sound a brighter sheen. This is most obvious in the vocal presentation, where the vocals are very clear, but are missing the weight that a stronger response in the lower mids can give you. Now, don’t get me wrong, I really like how the Sphear S does voices, but, it isn’t a romantic choice. It can also be quite prone to sibilance, so know your sources.”

“GoldenEar Technology’s Triton Reference isn’t quite as exquisite a time slicer as the top-of-the-line speakers from Magico, Rockport, Vandersteen, Vivid, and Wilson, all of which I’ve auditioned in the past year. What it does do is offer an expansive, almost always involving sweep of full-range sound for a price that is a small fraction of what any of those models cost.”
