PRP Resistors matched up with film and foil Rel Caps all hand soldered through the circuit board without surface mount components. An approach found primarily on gear running well beyond £10,000. Sonic quality with sound (no pun intended) value. The BHK 250 was ticking many of my ‘need to have’ audio boxes.”

The 099 is a refined performer, capable of being sat in front of for hours on end without fatigue. This is not code for ‘dull’; it’s detailed and dynamic, and – coupled to the right power amplifier – can handle the loud end of the volume control without introducing any kind of compression or distortion. In fact, were it not for the refinement, the effortless ability for this preamp to push any amplifier to its limits could make it a brute force design. As it is, the 099 is the archetypal ‘mail’d fist in a velvet glove’ design, with that combination of beefy grip over the rest of the system coupled with a sense of grace and charm as it stays in complete control.”

” I can even shave a song forward or back to precisely the second I left off. A vertical bar shows where you are in the song and as long as your finger is on the scrobbler, is always visible. Tapping anywhere on the album art pauses the player. When the DP-S1 is locked, inadvertent changes in attenuator position can be muted. Better yet, the attenuator doesn’t commandeer the touch screen, possibly forcing jumps up or down when all you wanted to do was change tracks or browse music. The only DSP available when playing DSD files is the low-pass filter. The Onkyo DP-S1 doesn’t properly do gapless, but gaps are small, pop-less, and even between DSD files, not terribly long.”

But the Rivals played music with supreme fidelity, openness, lifelike images, transparency, impact, touch, timing, dynamics, and flat-out musical fun. They sang with tubed amplification, and worked equally well with solid-state (as I discovered when I drove them with the Heed Elixir integrated amp). They gloried with both LPs and CDs. “The Katana low end really benefits from that slightly larger bespoke BA driver Noble have used (the 9th). It really does not sound like a generic BA bass performance and more like a very finely tuned and coherent hybrid with excellent depth. There is a slight bump in the Katana low end that produces some pleasing body, particularly the sub-bass power and presence which is clear and well defined.”

” The Quad throws a slight wrinkle into the equation. It keeps almost everything that makes the Triple great, but adds a little more presence to the mids and control to the lows, both improvements over the original. But it does so at double the cost. At $200 the overall impact could still easily be considered entry level pricing, a matter of rounding or something that can be easily managed by cooking for yourself for a few dinners. The equation to one’s ears is easily a improvement, and an experience that you likely get to rehash on many occasions during the morning commute or daily workout.

” The treble is perhaps the greatest improvement of the LCD-4 over all the other LCD series models. There is a good balance between treble, midrange, and bass that makes the LCD-4 what it is, but it is still not as clean or controlled as headphone models from other manufacturers. There can be treble distortion depending on the revision as some may be better than others, although it is not as severe as some of the LCD-2, 3, or X’s that I have heard.”
