EMM Labs DV2i Streaming DAC-Preamplifier Review

During my call with EMM, I asked which input would provide the highest audio quality. Most companies would have no problem answering that question since typically one or two inputs receive particular attention during design and development. EMM’s approach, however, is that bits are bits, and the same performance should be expected regardless of the type of input used, and so it proved.
While DSD64 and PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz are supported by all inputs, DSD128, DXD, and MQA are supported only on the network and USB inputs. For many years I’ve had an exaSound Delta music server connected to the USB input on my DV2, controlled by the Roon app. With the DV2i, I can still see my music on the Delta server through the network input but also stream from Qobuz. Furthermore, I can control the DV2i’s volume setting or mute it through the Roon app on my phone.

Racks aside, I’ve had scant success, or just rotten luck, with vibration-control devices. It’s certainly not for lack of trying. As a much younger man, I once placed two computer keyboard–type wrist pads, each about the size of a turkey sub, under my EAR 859 integrated amp. When I gave the amp a push, it jiggled reassuringly. Sitting down to listen, I heard an improvement that was, literally, stunning: a massive expansion of the soundfield, more detail and texture, faster transients, and a smoother, more musical personality. I felt like a genius, but only for another day. That’s how long it took for the memory gel in the pads to compress to their new shape under the amplifier and for the benefits to evaporate.

That’s not damning with faint praise, mind you. I’m just setting up the reason why these monitors really impressed the heck out of me, and think part of it is the AMT tweeter. It seems like I’m really an AMT fan, and every time I review a speaker with one I find myself hurling one compliment after another at its creased and folded little feet. The aforementioned bass performance seems to create an impressive and believable whole with the higher frequencies. I’m almost convinced that another tweeter would have to impact the performance of this speaker in a profoundly negative way.

This also means that with well-recorded, smaller-scale music, the DALI is joyous in what it can do. Revisiting Chris Thile’s earlier work with Nickel Creek delivers a truly stunning performance with the debut album of the same name. The achingly lovely When You Come Back Down is presented with an effortlessness that transcends the playback hardware and lets you rejoice in a presentation that balances energy and refinement to spectacular effect. The violin solo in the track can sound a little bright on the end of quite a few speakers, but here it’s positively sumptuous.

Chord Company PowerHAUS P6 mains distribution block Review

The 13A mains plugs in my system are held very tightly by the PowerHAUS P6 and are noticeably more secure than the sprung metal strip connections provided by the sockets of a standard mains block. My only quibble is that having the 16A IEC mains input socket on the top makes it a bit cumbersome when you plug in the mains lead, but that may not be a problem in all setups. In comparison with a standard mains block, I am conscious of a lower noise floor when using the PowerHAUS P6. With a lovely recording of Jupiter from Holtz’s The Planets Suite performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the quiet transition into the music of the stately section seems clearer and I can sense more of the detail in the flutes. In summary, the reasonably priced PowerHAUS P6 is beautifully made and is a very high-quality mains power block. NR
