” I really admire the discipline and control Hifiman have engineered into the V2’s bass performance. This is a flat but very natural sounding bass response with a lovely balance in note quality between attack and decay. The quantity and quality are remarkably consistent and accurate sounding right down to around 20-30hz with nothing really in the way of a perceptible roll off or an uneven mid-bass bias.”

“For the purposes of this review, Justin sent along a pair of Zu Cubes so that I could evaluate the speaker outputs. To this end, I set up the Mogwai and the Zu Cubes in my living room. After quite a bit of tweaking, I was able to arrive at a configuration for the Cubes (against the far wall, slightly off axis) that provided a reasonable soundstage. ”

“I have a quibble. While it’s impossible to discern at which frequencies the BeoLab 90’s various drivers hand off to each other, and the speaker’s harmonic integrity was continuous from lowest lows to highest highs, its sound was slightly warm, with rich but tight bass, a smooth midrange, and a mere suggestion of brightness in the very high treble. The BeoLab system is designed to permit the buyer or dealer to tune it to the buyer’s room and taste, but at the time of this auditioning, the comprehensive control app was not yet available. As a result, that kind of tweaking was not possible. What I heard was the original factory tuning, and an undefined target curve for the EQ.”

“” Fast forward several more weeks during which I cleaned more records on the Audiodesk but this time I used the longest cleaning cycle followed by a “pure” water rinse. At this point, a record which has gone through an extended cleaning on the Audiodesk is close to if not indistinguishable from one cleaned on the KL. Regardless of which machine is used, a “pure” water rinse results in an improvement in sound. Keep in mind that with either machine you are continuing to use the fluid over a large number of records plus in the case of the Audiodesk, you have the addition of the detergent/surfactant. ”

“You could go ahead and ignore all settings and still have a formidable audio chain with great dynamics, high resolution, and amazing matchability. But if you know that you will ignore the ADC and all the DSP functions altogether, you can find some systems that might punch even harder for the money. As my comparison in the Lake People Reference Series review shows, there is a slightly better performance to be found at the same price point, but this is nitpicking.”

“This track also highlights the excellent transient response of the AMP 8. Shostakovich is not something to be taken lightly and any diminishing of the force of the orchestra, whether in terms of leading edge attack or the weight of the playing, undermines the intensity of the piece. The AMP 8 – in the context of an excellent and matching system – retained this energy and the fast attack and decay needed to cope with an orchestra at full stretch made this a welcome addition to the home system. In all other aspects, that ‘first, do no harm’ approach pays off, because in all other perspectives the amplifier is simply doing its job without exaggeration or diminution. This is a good amplifier!”

“Tonally, the new V2 is a more energetic and intimate signature than the slightly laid back and darker V1. The soundstage has marginally narrowed in comparison to the V1 but on the flipside, the presentation is more involving. Imaging on the V2 is more precise and a lot more focused sucking you right in. This is a much more attention grabbing presentation overall.

But it also has the uncanny ability to elicit an emotional response when it reproduces the sound of an orchestra. The omni-directional sound places each instrument and group of instruments within this huge soundstage, and this soundstage is occupied by extremely realistic sounding instruments to create the illusion that one is hearing a facsimile of an orchestra in miniature. It does this by creating a three-dimensional sound of the instruments and groups of instruments that occupy this soundstage”
