The preparation and installation of the system is paramount to getting exactly the right sound. The demo room in which I sat took five hours to set up, by a man with decades of experience using and placing Wilson Audio’s equipment. Interestingly, it was done without complicated electronic instruments, just some simple measurements, some scribblings on a piece of paper, and a very knowledgeable ear. ” We did listen to the speakers for a bit with the left tweeter disconnected. My initial impression was that the speakers were somewhat laid-back, a bit unfocused, and lacked dynamic oomph. However, the speakers hadn’t undergone any position adjustments, so we were starting with the speakers at Neli’s best initial guess. Additionally, even though the speakers are burned in for a week at the factory, the drivers—especially the bass drivers—require a couple hundred hours of further break-in. In any event, I believe it’s a waste of time to tweak a system that’s not functioning properly, so we ended the first day’s listening.”

While the dialogue in the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 was clearly reproduced by the articulate mid woofers and accurate tweeter, and the snap of artillery fire in action scenes was dynamic yet non-fatiguing, the modestly sized towers were adequate, but not visceral in the low frequencies. All of this is well within expectations given their size and price point.”

” If you are sitting on a sub $100 earphone, then the proposition is less appealing and certainly a SoundMagic E10S that is being used as part of the Wired range is even less so. I would much rather see some sort of partnership with the likes of RHA or RockJaw for a wired version personally. The Snug wired RHA MA750i has all sorts of win written over it. The Snugs Pro for the Shure SE846 does seem better value if at a slightly higher price of £229. Given the Shure SE846 retails for £697.00, a custom fit for 1/3 of the price is not wholly unreasonable to stage musicians and pros and the odd mad audiophile or two.”

” Right away the FXA5 proved itself a contender. It’s a lively sounding headphone, dynamics are strong, bass is really deep and tuneful, and the treble is clear. All of that was evident with lossless files streamed from Tidal on my iPhone 6S. I listened at home and played downloaded tracks on the noisy New York subway, and the FXA5 consistently impressed. Then I pitted the superb Klipsch Reference 6i against the FXA5 and found clear transparency gains with the FXA5. The Reference 6i is no slouch, but the FXA5’s bass, mids and treble are clearer. It’s a much better headphone.”

” I can’t recommend the BHK 250 enough. Like I said I bought this one and it is now here between the speakers with the Claytons off on a rack. I won’t sell the Claytons ever and for sure they will eventually find their way back into the system. And having a stereo amplifier as opposed to monoblocks is an adjustment: different routing of cables, one less AC cord, one less platform… and one component sitting between the speakers unlike the Claytons sitting off to the sides.
