Sumiko S.9 Subwoofer Reviewed

“Basically, the S.9 made the F206s sound like the larger Revel F208s, although with smoother bass response because I was free to position the sub in the spot where it works best with my room acoustics. I found that, with music, the S.9 had enough muscle to do what I wanted it to do. Now, I didn’t put on the latest Kanye West album and crank the system to the max, but I did put on the recording of the Saint-Säens “Organ Symphony” from the Boston Audio Society Test CD 1, which has deep pipe-organ tones reaching down to 16 Hz. Not surprisingly, the 10-inch S.9 couldn’t handle the deepest tones the way a good 15-inch sub can, but it did reproduce them at a modest level without apparent distortion. When I clicked the AVA ABX box’s remote to go back to the F206s on their own, the tones disappeared entirely.”

Gradient 6.0 Review

“Apart from these details, I think that 6.0 are fantastic, user-friendly and extremely graceful speakers, which seem to be ideal for small and medium-sized spaces. After five minutes I began to think that if I didn’t review speakers, amps, cables and DACs, I would consider buying 6.0, combined with Cyrus Lyric 09 or Naim SuperUniti… But everything would depend on whether these lightweight boxes can really play well”
WILSON AUDIO SPECIALTIES SASHA SERIES-2 LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW

“Interestingly, the new speaker’s crossover is even quieter in terms of background noise or hash — as much as this can be a difficult concept to describe and to grasp unless actually experienced. Sasha Series-2 expresses low level transient information and minutiae succinctly, elevating the sense of being present at a ‘real’ performance. This quality also allows vocals to sound clear and natural with extraordinary articulation. You won’t miss a word even from, say, Rickie Lee Jones’ often-slurred incantations.”
OPPO PM-3 Review
August 19, 2015 Comments Off on OPPO PM-3 Review
” PM-3 is currently the cheapest handset in OPPO’s catalogue using planar transducers which are very similar to those used in the flagship PM-1 model. Each driver takes form of a round, flat membrane with a diameter of 55 mm, made of seven thin layers for maximum durability while maintaining low weight. The structure of the membrane is designed to provide excellent stability, even at high thermal loads”

When I listen to speakers or for that matter any piece of equipment there are certain things I listen for, such as: tonality, high end extension, clean tight bass, transition between bass, midrange, treble, and balance from extreme to extreme. Secondly I listen for sound stage depth, height, width..

” At the same time, some of the engineering really does put the Performance DC in a slightly different category to many rivals. The pitch stabilty, minimal coloration and impressive resistance to surface noise makes this a great turntable for anyone returning to the format after years of digital because it competes with it on an almost even footing in competence while trouncing it for joy”

“We don’t normally mention this because our measurement microphone isn’t rated for accurate performance in the ultrasonic ranges, but it can give an indication of reach. Using a 96kHz pink noise signal, the output turned out to be strong all the way to 36,000Hz. The tweeter truly is a ‘super tweeter’, at least in terms of high frequency extension.”
Pioneer turntables PL-30-K Review

“A 12-inch 45 RPM EP of the Smiths “The Peel Sessions” was vivid and totally alive sounding. That’s what’s great about vinyl on a good quality turntable: the music can blow you away. I’m not much of a Smiths fan — I found this one on the street a few years ago and rarely played it. It was in perfect shape, so I guess the original owner didn’t either, but I now love this short set of four tunes recorded on May 18, 1983.”
Soulution 711 Stereo Amplifier $65,000 Review
August 18, 2015 Comments Off on Soulution 711 Stereo Amplifier $65,000 Review
” The Soulution 711’s completely “black” backgrounds and absolute control of the speaker drivers resulted in marvelously rendered soundstages. Listening to Livingston Taylor’s Ink (24/96 AIFF, Chesky) and other higher-resolution recordings convinced me that the 711 was capable of passing along musical information completely unscathed. “Isn’t She Lovely” was complete with extremely textured if lightly struck percussion, and string sound that was dense, but with sharp, crisp attacks. The sound never ventured into brittleness, and Taylor’s voice was as true as I have heard it. The soundstage was wide and deep, extending past my front wall and making my room “disappear.” And again, the sound was neutral, devoid of artifacts.”
