“Listening started with the AudioQuest Diamond USB cable. This would turn out to be the best match, but before I reached that conclusion I tried various other cables. The Wireworld Platinum Starlight 7 offered a more forward sound with a bolder character, but although I did like the Wireworld’s fuller bass, I found that it took away too much subtlety and refinement. ”

” While initially the dSP’s mid section felt quite tidy and immediate, sometimes that same immediacy felt a little to forward around the human voice. If vocals are your thing, than this subtly may not even peak your radar, but in my never-ending quest for balance, I found myself reverting back to pink noise tests to confirm that things weren’t being overcooked. The results were actually very reassuring”

“The speed and precision of solid-state plus the warm, textural feel of tubes. With products like the Virtuoso, I don’t feel the need to warm things up. The sound is controlled, but not so linear that it bores me. There’s excitability to the music, a lively-ness that’s engaging and fun – but also realistic”

” Regardless of how a signal will be delivered to Manhattan, it will deliver an orderly, well thought-through sound. Not to bright but selective and tuneful. Hi-res files, especially DSD ones, seem to offer slightly “softer” sound, more open, with more air. For me though, a classic CD transport still has some advantages, like coherence and liquidity of the sound.”

” The treble extension is much more natural and doesn’t sound coaxed or pushed thus creates a natural roll out rather than a forced impression. There is virtually no sibilance to presentation of the upper frequencies while there isn’t much in the way of harshness to the mid-range either. The Sovtec tubes still had a bit of hardness to the mid-range so the change in tubes is welcome addition rather than a subtraction.”

” Tied to this was superb tonal accuracy. The textures and harmonic colours of various instruments, piano in particular, were quite extraordinary. The instrument was always rendered with authentic scale whilst being extended, smooth and realistic”

” The situation is further complicated by the fact that in addition to the electrical crossover, the horns themselves serve as mechanical crossovers. What he was willing to share is that that upper bass horn handles frequencies from 125 to 600 Hz approximately.”

” interestingly, both sets of Blumenstein speakers I’ve heard here at the TONE studio have sounded incredibly good with the $90,000-per-pair Pass Labs Xs300 monoblocks I use as my main reference.

“Clearly, the inertness and structural density of Hailey’s prodigious aluminum mass pays dividends in ways that simpler structures simply wouldn’t or couldn’t. In fact, Yoav’s painstaking adherence to every little detail of the speaker’s design, result in little to no loss of musical energy and practically an optimum of resonance control”

” the HE-560 definitely did not disappoint there—the bass is fantastic, easily among the best I’ve heard from a headphone. It is deep, flat, and powerful, finding the ideal balance of controlled and hard-hitting. There is no discernible mid-bass hump, and yet the HE-560 still delivers excellent impact and rumble alike”
