GoldenEar Technology SuperSub XXL Subwoofer $1999 – Review
October 22, 2016 Comments Off on GoldenEar Technology SuperSub XXL Subwoofer $1999 – Review
“Why not just turn up the volume on my adjustable woofers in the Lansche 4.1 you ask? Because the SuperSub XXL subs keep the main drivers from having to work beyond their comfort zone, and the SuperSub XXL subs really own the low bass space. The drivers on the Lansche simply cannot move enough air to compete. The ability to simply overlap the low frequencies of my 4.1 without a great deal of fretting worked just fine.”

PSB SubSeries 450 Subwoofer $1499 – Review
October 11, 2016 Comments Off on PSB SubSeries 450 Subwoofer $1499 – Review
“Summarizing the SubSeries 450’s sound, Kevin proclaimed: “Its ability to deliver dead-flat LF response down to 20Hz is equaled and, perhaps or perhaps not, surpassed by monster models costing twice as much.” That indicates high value indeed from a $1500 subwoofer — the sort of high value that has been an earmark of Paul Barton designs from PSB’s beginnings. However, for those for whom a smaller, lighter subwoofer makes more practical sense than a big, heavy one, even when price is not a concern, Kevin had this reassurance: ”

REL T7I SUBWOOFER $999 REVIEW
September 26, 2016 Comments Off on REL T7I SUBWOOFER $999 REVIEW
“For classical music listeners, the most immediate rewards come in the form of ambient information. A prime example would be the LP of the Copland Fanfare [Dallas, Johanos: Analogue Productions], which depends on the explosive kettledrums and trombones to establish the majesty of the piece. Take the REL out of the system, and the cavernous, immersive soundstage becomes a narrower, more generic space.”

2016 EDITORS’ CHOICE AWARDS: SUBWOOFERS $3,000+

“These two subs—identical except for woofer size (12″ vs. 13.5″) and amplifier power (1500W vs. 2500W)—raise the bar in subwoofer performance with their unlikely combination of brute-force power and tonal and dynamic finesse. Capable of delivering high SPLs at very low frequencies without strain, the Fathoms are equally adept at resolving the pitches, dynamics, and tone colors of an acoustic bass. Reference-quality performance at a reasonable price.”

PSB SubSeries 450 Subwoofer Reviewed
September 8, 2016 Comments Off on PSB SubSeries 450 Subwoofer Reviewed
“The SubSeries 450 is impressively powerful for its size, but it can’t deliver the ultra-deep, floor-shaking bass that many larger subs can. During the U-571 scenes I played, there’s a part where the submarine passes under a destroyer. The sub’s engine sounds in this scene are extremely low-pitched and tend to make subwoofers distort and/or make their ports chuff or their passive radiators rattle. The SubSeries 450 exhibited no such distress, but neither did it shake the floor. I could hear the vibrations from the sub’s engine, but I couldn’t really feel them.”

XTZ SUB 12.17 Subwoofer Review
September 2, 2016 Comments Off on XTZ SUB 12.17 Subwoofer Review
” The SUB 12.17 was certainly up to the task, displaying a precision and control that is rarely found on subwoofers at this price point. What really impressed was how well the XTZ integrated into both two-channel and multi-channel setups. As a result, the subwoofer will work well with any number of systems and regardless of whether you watch movies or listen to music, the big 12” driver will deliver deep and detailed bass that is both controlled and precise. A subwoofer is designed to pick up the lower frequencies where the main speakers roll off and this is what the SUB 12.17 does so well, seamlessly integrating into the rest of the system.”
