“Without spoilers: Sadness and Joy accidentally get sucked up a big pipe. Another important soundtrack moment with a large, taut ‘thwobb’ effect that drops deep. The d108 simply delivered all this, with no evidence of its small size, and without a shrug. Even when our protagonist gets in trouble, Islands Of Personality crashing into the abyss, the room-shaking tones got played with clean, full-bodied aplomb.”

“”This works by installing the T/9i in precisely the places where traditionally you shouldn’t place loudspeakers – the corners of the room. It also works by very careful listening tests, and having the testicular fortitude to be able to own two £900 boxes that you turn down to the point where they are all but inaudible. And it’s here where things go wrong for most systems, and why subs get a poor rap in the audio world. The idea of a subwoofer as bass tamer and active room treatment device seems counter intuitive, and the temptation to set a pair of subs up by using organ music, cinematic explosions, or dubstep is almost unavoidable. But do that and you will invariably set the T/9i (or any other sub) too high.”

” In all my tests, as expected, placing the subs together produced the purest output. In fact, the pair of these damn near matched the audible and tactile impact of either the Hsu or the SVS when used alone. Were there limitations to what they could do? Sure—the Speedwoofer pair couldn’t go quite as deep as the big boys, especially when playing some organ samples that dip below 20 hertz. But, truthfully, it’s rare to find bass this deep, and given the difference in cost and size between the Speedwoofer and my reference subs, that’s a pretty reasonable trade-off.”

” For those who like to maintain brand consistency, the Prestige 2000SW is a perfect, low-frequency mate to the various standalone speakers in the aforementioned Prestige line. The black piano lacquer finished version sent to me was gorgeous, and is sure to match whatever speakers you mate to it. Overall, Paradigm’s Prestige 2000SW is an awe-inducing, powered subwoofer that can handle the depths of most any movie sound effect, but it is also equally adept at transmitting the proper bass frequencies from your favorite hi-res music. From Rock to Classical to bombastic action flicks, I do not see how you could do any better in the bass department. An Everything Audio Network Stellar Sound Award for the Paradigm Prestige 2000SW.”

” JL Audio’s most expensive subs have a way of making even the most ordinary double-bass lines absolutely riveting, and of easily parsing the differences between the similar sounds of the double bass and cello. The Dominion d110 didn’t do those things as well as JL Audio’s best, but it provided better pitch definition than any similarly priced sub I’ve heard.”
