” Although I now had good linearity, I also tweaked the Sub/Sat Balance on the CR-1, with the expected results: I could easily tilt the response, in very fine increments, one way or the other. A setting of 2dB on the +Sat side of the dial tilted the balance toward the satellites and proved best in my setup — despite a depression in the Triangles’ midrange between 1 and 2kHz, they now had a touch more output there. I found this control intuitive in use, and greatly preferred it to using the level control on the subwoofer alone. ”

” If your electronics lack preamp outputs, no problem, use the Ultra 12’s stereo speaker-level inputs, and speaker-level pass-through outputs to hook up your front left and right speakers. If all of that sounds confusing, the Ultra X12 Owner’s Manual offers comprehensive setup tips and instructions; it’s one of the best-written manuals I’ve seen in ages.”

” Placement flexibility becomes so much better and honestly, what’s not to like about a powerful, quality sub with a small footprint? I became interested to explore, in more detail, how the ForceField 5 performs as well as it does. “Being a rear ported design the R-12SW requires careful placement to a rear wall to augment bass output. However, care is advised to ensure an optimum distance. Too close to the wall, you will likely end up with an over bloated bass. Too far away, the bass will likely sound weak and lack impact and slam.”

” There’s only one thing I disliked about setting up the Ultra-X12: the Max Extension mode requires stuffing the included foam plug into one of the ports, but it doesn’t say this on the back of the sub, near the mode switch, as it does on, say, the Hsu VTF-15H. ”

You need to approach this with due care and attention, but the bass fits so well, it might as well sound like one big loudspeaker. As a result, bass isn’t overt through the subwoofer, it just blends and extends the sound of the loudspeaker, and this typically makes the loudspeaker sound better further up the frequency response, too.”
