Having accepted that the Helix Two Mk3 delivers bass as deep and powerful as any I have heard in my room, I dug out a 12in single from one of the most fragile-sounding (and underappreciated) ensembles in rock history: Wilson Phillips. This trio of sublime vocalists’ ‘Release Me’ [SBK Records 12SBK11] oozed harmony to rival that of their parents, which hovered over the soundstage with an airiness that can only be described as ‘gossamer-like’.
‘Pseuds Corner’ might be in my future for that, but I cannot deny the recording its staggering impact. After an a cappella intro, massive percussion kicks in, displaying precisely the opposite sonic qualities, not least transient attack that takes one’s breath away. The Döhmann Helix Two Mk3 wasn’t reining in the audible gifts it bestowed upon me, beyond its own inherent brilliance and the way it forced a reassessment of the aforementioned speakers and cartridges. It made me realise that Wilson Phillips should be mentioned in the same breath as The Everly Brothers and The Hollies.

Rega Planar 10 Turntable and Aphelion 2 Cartridge $6345 Review
August 12, 2023 Comments Off on Rega Planar 10 Turntable and Aphelion 2 Cartridge $6345 Review
Rega has delivered a superb flagship vinyl spinner that competes closely with the very finest at its price point. Indeed, for a deck of this caliber, the price makes it something of a bargain. For 50 years, Gandy and his team have been steadily refining their distinct design and engineering principles, and the Planar 10 is a fully developed realization of their priorities. It’s incredibly simple to set up, beautifully made, and aesthetically pleasing. Combined with its captivating sound, those characteristics make it easy to recommend the Planar 10, without reservation. Few decks are capable of expressing the mood and atmosphere of music to this degree and I really enjoyed that particular quality in the Planar 10. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m heading back to that late-night bar in Rio. There’s a leggy Brazilian still waiting for me with a caipirinha

Acoustic Signature Ascona Mk.2 turntable, TA-9000 tonearm $17,995 Review

Acoustic Signature’s top tonearm model is available in lengths of 9″ or 12″; I chose the 9″ version of this very handsome design ($17,995). The arm pivots, horizontally and vertically, on preloaded precision ball bearings produced in the US by Timken and adjusted in-house by a bearing specialist.
Much of the arm’s cost is due to its innovative armtube. Gunther Frohnhöfer claims that you can go “stiff and light” with carbon fiber, with the disadvantage of undamped resonances within the audioband, or opt for die-cast aluminum or magnesium tubes, which are relatively stiff, but heavy and also not well damped. Frohnhöfer’s solution to the problem of producing a lightweight, extremely stiff, well-damped armtube was to use two concentric aluminum tubes, both with conical exteriors. The tubes are bound together with more than 700 branch-like connecting pads, arranged in a spiral around the inner tube—an incredibly complex construction.

Meanwhile, the step-up Miracord 60, which is also intended to be an heir to the Miracord 90, comes equipped with a diamond chamfered 22mm die-cast aluminum platter, lightweight carbon-fiber tonearm with gimbal bearing and removable headshell, and a built-in optical sensor that sends its signal to a PID algorithm in the microcontroller that is then said to “tune the speed” of the DC motor.

SME 60 record player $71,900 Review

Using my Model 30/2 turntable and Series V tonearm as a benchmark, I was able to directly compare the Model 60 with the Series VA arm with my Model 30/2 with the Series V arm. SME’s fixed headshell-mounting holes made it possible to align my test cartridges identically in both arms then move the cartridges back and forth between them easily without having to go through a complete realignment each time. I did this with both my Dynavector DRT XV-1s and my Lyra Atlas cartridges, allowing easy and meaningful comparisons.
You’d be forgiven if, after looking at the Model 60’s brutal stance, you thought it was likely to sound like the musical equivalent of a Vin Diesel acting performance: big on drama and action, but with some of the subtlety lost along the way. Nothing could be further from reality. This brute can dance on its tiptoes, with finesse and fine gradations of tonal color that go beyond even the formidable 30/2 Series V combination.

Audio-Technica AT-LP2022 Fully Manual Belt-Drive 60th Anniversary TurntableReview

The turntable is quite something; it just sits there, waiting for you, almost daring you to choose the best album for it to play. Its aesthetics are original and its tonearm/cart implementation working in unison to align themselves for our listening pleasure is an achievement on its own.
Back in the day having a Les Paul guitar or a Marshall amp said something about your style, your taste in music, and how you’d like to be perceived. And back in the day, I, like many other teens who went to gigs and watch cover bands, wished we had the money to buy that gear—it meant something. It feels like now at almost 50 years old it was my time to play in the band. The AT-LP2022 60th Anniversary Turntable is a commemorative component of years of work and achievement. It’s good to know it’s in good hands and I highly recommend you get yourself one if they’re still out there.
