Oracle Delphi Mk.VI Second Generation turntable

” At the risk of jumping the gun on my listening comments, I’ll describe here the effectiveness of Oracle’s adjustable suspension-damping scheme. As Jacques Riendeau came to the end of his ministrations, he said he wanted to begin by listening to the Delphi without its suspension damping, and asked for a decent-quality recording of simple music: no audiophile spectaculars (not that I keep such things on hand). I selected “New Chance Blues” and “Green Light on the Southern,” from Norman Blake and Tony Rice’s Blake & Rice (LP, Rounder 0233); the former is a duet for mandolin and guitar, while the latter is a solo vocal by Blake, accompanied by two guitars; I believe M. Riendeau enjoyed both selections.”

Rega RP8 Turntable Review

February 9, 2016 Comments Off on Rega RP8 Turntable Review

“The RP8 has an impressive looking ‘skeletal’ plinth design and uses an updated version of the Planar 9’s engineered hub bearing assembly (more of the trickle down). The outer shell that turns the turntable from skeleton to full body does not touch the curves of the main plinth and is primarily a platform for the dustcover. Rega uses a 24v low voltage motor that is controlled by an outboard, customized power supply. The glass platter is a triple layer design and the sub platter is made of aluminum. ”

TriangleART Symphony Turntable Review

February 3, 2016 Comments Off on TriangleART Symphony Turntable Review

“The TriangleART Symphony produced deep, rich, powerful, bass without any overhang and at the same time the music came across as being lively with plenty of swing and presence that make listening to music a lot of fun. These are rare traits in any source component. Yes, there are some that do some of the things better, and a rare few that do both better, but I don’t know of any without spending far more money.”

Triangle Art Concerto Turntable Review

” In the end we found much to appreciate musically with the Concerto system. Yeah, it is a $12,000 package and for sure one could save money by simply going for the basic set-up sans the platform, speed control, and record clamp. I would be surprised if one experienced much of a drop off in musical pleasure and performance by omitting these from the system—the basic Concerto and Zeus cartridge are the centerpieces and these ancillaries are simply upping the ante. And such a wonderful centerpiece the Concerto is within this analog system. Sure, a turntable is nothing more than just a motor spinning a platter riding on a bearing with an arm and cartridge traveling in the groove of a record—sounds simple enough- but Tom did his homework and has a winner here. Well done! Highly recommended.”

Thales TTT-Slim Turntable and Easy Tonearm Review

January 30, 2016 Comments Off on Thales TTT-Slim Turntable and Easy Tonearm Review

” A couple of things in the setup are different from other turntables. First, this is a battery-operated table and its charger is plugged into the wall and into the rear of the table. Thales suggests, and I agree, it sounds best when you unplug the charger from the back of the table when using the table. You get 20 hours of playing time before it needs to be charged so this is an easy recommendation to follow. The other thing is that the turntable itself comes with a grounding wire that plugs into the back of the table and is hooked up to the grounding lug on your phono preamp. This means you have both the turntable and tonearm grounded. I found if I did not do this I had a good bit of hum, but when I grounded the table it was dead quiet.”

Kronos Sparta Turntable c/w Helena Tonearm & ZYX Premium Omega MC Cartridge Review

January 26, 2016 Comments Off on Kronos Sparta Turntable c/w Helena Tonearm & ZYX Premium Omega MC Cartridge Review

” Now that we know the Kronos/ZYX combo is super silent and highly transparent, we can touch on tonal quality. Tonal response is dead neutral, which I believe is contributed by the cartridge. There’s not a hint of warmth, felt during play back. Having said that, the sound never, never seemed cold either. Highs are succinctly refined with a laid-back air of exquisiteness thrown in for good measure. The highs are always given the right degree prominence, just slightly behind in the sound stage, but yet with every attack and decay intact, before the next note rises. ”

“The limited edition will sport a slightly different finish, a numbered platter, slight tweaks to the feet and a magnesium tonearm (as opposed to aluminium on the standard model). Otherwise, the decks are the same. We’re told both models will cost the same, which is round $4000 – more than three times the typical SL-1200 price of previous generations.”
