ASTELL&KERN AK500N MQS NETWORK AUDIO PLAYER $12,000 REVIEW

“Finally, totally confounding my expectations, I preferred playback from my NAS over my home network to both the other sources. It seemed to combine the best features of the other two: low-end depth and impact were just as great, and I heard just as many bass details as from the SSD and more treble detail than from the USB drive. Microdynamics were just spectacular; the music sounded like a spring being wound up, then suddenly released. While I’ve heard this characteristic from other servers, it’s seldom if ever been as starkly defined as with the AK500N.
Soulution 711 Stereo Amplifier $65,000 Review
August 18, 2015 Comments Off on Soulution 711 Stereo Amplifier $65,000 Review
” The Soulution 711’s completely “black” backgrounds and absolute control of the speaker drivers resulted in marvelously rendered soundstages. Listening to Livingston Taylor’s Ink (24/96 AIFF, Chesky) and other higher-resolution recordings convinced me that the 711 was capable of passing along musical information completely unscathed. “Isn’t She Lovely” was complete with extremely textured if lightly struck percussion, and string sound that was dense, but with sharp, crisp attacks. The sound never ventured into brittleness, and Taylor’s voice was as true as I have heard it. The soundstage was wide and deep, extending past my front wall and making my room “disappear.” And again, the sound was neutral, devoid of artifacts.”
WOO AUDIO 234 $15,000 – REVIEW
August 10, 2015 Comments Off on WOO AUDIO 234 $15,000 – REVIEW
” So who is this Woo for? $15,900 is a mighty sum, and if you want better tubes, the price gets pricier. In fact, if you want the full compliment of tubes you’ll be coming perilously close to the $20k mark. However, the Woo Audio 234 is one of the most impeccably-made amplifiers I’ve ever seen (or heard). Each one is built by hand in Woo’s workshop in New York to exhaustingly precise standards and tolerances. The 234 monobloc is unapologetically a Statement component from Woo Audio. Because they are integrated designs, you won’t need a preamp, and this increases the value proposition. Still, at somewhere between $18k and $19k for the full setup, we’re still talking a very serious sum. But let’s put some perspective on this.”

” Pioneer’s BDP-88FD is an excellent universal player. Built like a brick house. Equipped with outstanding 4K video upconversion. Capable of making CDs and SACDs sound awesome. That said, as much as I appreciate Pioneer’s flagship, I find it hard to recommend buying a $2,000-listed universal player when the UHD Blu-ray format is due out in just a matter of months (we hope). Even if I considered the Pioneer based solely on audio performance, my music-listening habits have largely migrated to computer and streaming audio. Like many other folks, I find that it’s a rare day when I play an actual CD, let alone an SACD”
Mark Levinson №585 AMP $12,000 Review

” Such presentation of bass is quite characteristic and slightly different from the №383. With the №383 there was more content. Everything was deeper and more vivid. In the case of the №585 the beat is faster and, I would even say, clearer, but shorter and it decays faster. This is, however, what we pay so much money for.”
Audio Note Kagura Amp $150,000 – Review

” There is more to the Kagura than unusual purity, transparency, and liquidity. The Kagura rendered large-scale symphonic works with seemingly limitless dynamic contrast along with a powerful and full bodied low-end. My reference Conspiracy loudspeakers has a nominal sensitivity rating of 92 dB and is relatively easy to drive, so they were an excellent match. ”
